Southern Chinese are not so much of smokers as the Northern Chinese in comparison and this of course has a lot to do with the cold climes . But back to the question of why offer a cig? Yep, they usually say "吸烟有害健康" which means "Smoking is harmful to your health".

Which they are. I used to smoke a few years back, but I never really enjoyed it.
