A massive banquet was held for more than 15,000 people to celebrate villagers moving into new apartment buildings that were completed only after their former homes were demolished, mainland media reports.

Goodbye old Canton: Guangzhou is booming, but at what cost to the people who live there?

The residents and their families and friends were seated at 1,500 tables laid out in the former Yangji village, in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, on Sunday, theGuangzhou Daily reported.

The poorly designed areas, which were dwarfed by skyscrapers, had been providing cheap housing for migrant workers.

The Yangji village, which stood beside the high-end Zhujiang New Town, was included in a redevelopment project in 2009. But it took the government years to persuade all of the former residents to allow their 1,496 homes to be demolished.

As part of their compensation deals, flats in the new buildings were allocated to them.

Based on the current property prices in Guangzhou, each villager now owns a flat worth about 10 million yuan (HK$11.62 million), the report said.

The village authority and a property developer paid several million yuan to stage the banquet, the report said.

The residents also enjoyed dances, magic shows and Cantonese opera during the banquet.

This is the success of the majority villagers which account for 98%!
2% villagers had blocked the redevelopment project for years!

China has a big gap with the developed countries, and China has to continue to work hard.
Redeveloping these urban slums is the priority.
The poorest people are in the city.

In 2050, China only reached the level of moderately developed countries.
We are a populous countr, we must continue to work hard

Wait for few years, pop will keep coming down. As it is urbanisation rapidly brings down pop growth due to stress and hormonal dysfunction. On TOP of that a one child policy for 40 years will Ensure that China will become rich per capita

The biggest slum in Guangzhou City will be redeveloped soon once 80% villagers agree!

The cost of redevelopment is very high, and not everyone is satisfied. It is not easy for government to do the job. By the way,the so called slum dwellers are lucky guys, they will all become millionaires in U.S dollars.

Yes, it is high...
Not everyone can be satisfied, it is enough with consent from 80-90% slum dwellers.....

Millionaires in U.S. dollars....
I don't know if there is a word 千万富翁 in English.....

We are talking about 10+ million dollars for some families, and hundreds of families with tens of million yuan

Dunno why....
All of a sudden....it's a privilege to have a house in the slums......

So they (the 2%) fought so hard for years to keep "this" lifestyle and conditions and blocked progress?

Got to admire Mainland China government's patience and good will.

The cost of redevelopment is very high, and not everyone is satisfied. It is not easy for government to do the job. By the way,the so called slum dwellers are lucky guys, they will all become millionaires in U.S dollars.

Yes. If China were a populist, quick selfish fix polity, there would be no way in the world that it would have progressed the way it did over the past decades.
