Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Wei Fenghe is scheduled to arrive here on a brief visit on Tuesday highlighting the "steady and rapid progress" in Bangladesh-China military cooperation in recent years.

"Yes, the Chinese Defense Minister Fenghe is coming," a senior official told UNB.

Bangladesh Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed visited China in November, 2019.

General Fenghe was appointed as the head of China's Ministry of National Defense at the 13th National People's Congress on 19 March, 2018.

The Chinese Defense Minister is likely to meet President Abdul Hamid apart from his meeting with the Bangladesh Army Chief.

The visit is taking place when Bangladesh and China are in a discussion over Covid-19 vaccine cooperation.

Earlier this month, Chief of Army Staff of Indian Army Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane also visited Bangladesh.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has recently said he is willing to work with Bangladesh to further connect their development strategies, deepen practical cooperation across the board, and strive for new outcomes from the Bangladesh-China Strategic Partnership of Cooperation.

"China and Bangladesh are close neighbours and traditional friends. In recent years, China-Bangladesh relations enjoy a sound momentum of development, with strategic mutual trust being strengthened and cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative pressing ahead," he said in a message to his Bangladesh counterpart Abdul Hamid.

China's Minister of Defence Fenghe is likely to go to Colombo, Sri Lanka from Dhaka on Tuesday before heading towards Beijing.

I don't think the Chinese Defence Minister has anything to do with the Corona vaccine. It is completely out of his scope although the joint statement may say something like this.

I believe this visit relates to BAF's declared intention of purchasing MRCA jets.

4-6 squadrons of J10 and BAF will go from laughing stock to supreme chad in 5 years

We can keep dreaming. Expect j10 after 15 years when this MRCA research has gone nowhere and world has moved on to having 6th gen platforms with 5th gen fighters for bulk

I think it's part of mind games. India banned its export of vaccines to Bangladesh which is being highlighted in the media with considerable interest. Anti-India sentiments have been already brewing as seen in the anti-Modi protests.

China has picked it up and want to send a message to India.

Chinese defense minister due tomorrow

Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Wei Fenghe is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on a brief visit tomorrow, officials confirmed.

During his visit, he is scheduled to meet President Abdul Hamid and Bangladesh Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed.

A foreign ministry official told The Daily Star, "He will be visiting Dhaka on the occasion of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence and birth centenary of Bangabandhu."

Asked if there is any agenda on military cooperation with China, the official said he was not aware of it.

The visit of Wei Fenghe, who will also visit Sri Lanka after the Dhaka visit the same day, comes at a time when Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will virtually host a ministerial meeting with South Asian leaders of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka under a new initiative of China-South Asia Covid Cooperation and Post-pandemic Economic Recovery.

The initiative comes amid rising cases of coronavirus infections in South Asian countries, mainly India where daily cases are on average 3.5 lakh. Bangladesh is also struggling to get vaccines after India banned the export of vaccines by the Serum Institute of India amid rising needs of inoculation for the Indians and shortage of raw materials from the US.

Earlier this month, the Chief of Army Staff of Indian Army Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane also visited Bangladesh.

You may be right about the mind game. But, I do not think China has suddenly decided to send its Defence Minister to BD because of India's problem with supplying covid vaccine.

A minister's schedule is decided a long time ago though the newspapers get to know about it at the last moment.

More than mind games.

This was planned for a long tine. A minister only comes if there is something important to disscuss or sign.

I think its the vaccine and J10. TOT of atgm. Hopefully a few new subs aswell
