Chinese Defense Minister Discusses ties with Indonesia & Singapore

Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Liang Guanglie met his Indonesian and Singaporean counterparts Tuesday on bilateral military ties on the sidelines of the first ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus).

At the meeting with Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Liang said the Chinese military stood ready to work with Indonesian military to expand cooperation and lift bilateral military ties to a new high.

Purnomo said Indonesia would like to strengthen cooperation with China in defense consultation, military training, humanitarian assistance and other regional and international issues.

When meeting with Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Teo Chee Hean, Liang said China and Singapore had experienced progress in defense cooperation in the past two decades.

China was willing to strengthen exchanges and coordination with Singapore within the framework of the ADMM-Plus and contribute to regional peace and stability.

Teo said Singapore and China had boosted cooperation in high-level military exchanges, policy dialogue and other fields in recent years.

Singapore expected the two sides to strengthen understanding and trust, expand cooperation, and continuously advance bilateral military ties, he said.

We shouldn't adopt a holier than thou attitude.
Even though the current leaders may not offer hope but over time relationship will bear fruit, and chinese foreign policy will have influence on those countries, barring interference.

Correct. Instead of getting encircled by other countries as the USSR has in the past China should improve relations with her neighbors if possible. The recent military exercises with Turkey and Australia are a good start.

Indonesia might eventually become one of China's most important trade partners and allies. Currently, Indonesia is the 15th largest economy in the world, but they have all the potential to become one of the 10 biggest economies in the world.
