China wants to deepen military ties with Iran, a senior Chinese admiral was quoted as saying on Thursday after a meeting with Iran's defense minister in Tehran.

Admiral Sun Jianguo, deputy chief of staff of the People's Liberation Army, told Iranian Defence Minister Hossein Dehghan that China paid great attention to developing relations with Iran, China's Defence Ministry said.

"The aim of this delegation's visit is to further promote friendship, deepen cooperation and exchange views with Iran on bilateral military ties and issues of mutual concern," Sun said, according to the statement.

The trip will also "promote the preservation of international and regional peace and stability", he added.

China and Iran have close diplomatic, economic, trade and energy ties, and China has been active in pushing both the United States and Iran to reach agreement on Iran's controversial nuclear program.

Under a multilateral deal, agreed in July, sanctions imposed by the United States, European Union and United Nations will be lifted in return for Iran agreeing to long-term curbs on a nuclear program that the West has suspected was aimed at creating a nuclear bomb.

Sun said that China, the biggest buyer of Iranian oil, was pleased that an agreement had been reached.

Last year, for the first time ever, two Chinese warships docked at Iran's Bandar Abbas port to take part in a joint naval exercises in the Gulf and an Iranian admiral was given tours of a Chinese submarine and warships.

Iran and Russia have both provided support for President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's civil war. China, however, remains a low key diplomatic player in the Middle East despite its dependence on the region's oil. Beijing has repeatedly warned that military action cannot end the crisis in Syria and has called multiple times for talks and a political solution.

Iran’s defense minister says the Islamic Republic and China share a very successful experience of defense cooperation and are determined to strengthen mutual relations in the defense sector.

Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan made the remarks in a meeting with China’s Defense Minister Chang Wanquan in Moscow, Russia, on Friday.

The Iranian official brought up the issue of the ISIL Takfiri terrorists and the extent of their influence in East Asia, which he stated, meant a threat to security of China, the Caucasus region and the Central Asia.

Brigadier General Dehqan, who was in the Russian capital to attend the fourth Moscow International Security Conference, also emphasized that regional countries should improve serious cooperation and interaction to eradicate Takfiri-Zionist groups.

He denounced the West for supporting terrorist groups and violating the rights of nations in the region and warned that insecurity would have its own repercussions for the very governments that support the extremist groups.

He added that a meeting which is scheduled to be held among Iran, Russia and China in the near future would play a very effective role in “countering common threats and settling security problems in the region.”

The Chinese defense minister, for his part, hailed Iran’s proposal for the trilateral meeting and stressed the importance of improving bilateral and multilateral defense and military on global issues.

Also in a meeting with the Chinese deputy chief of staff, General Dehqan noted that cooperation between Tehran and Beijing has entered a new stage in all fields, specially in defense fields, and expressed the hope that the two countries' cooperation would enhance to strategic levels.

In relevant remarks today, a senior Iranian commander underlined the country's resolve to further develop military ties with China along with bilateral economic relations.

"Iran and China enjoy common positions and we want to expand our military ties like economic relations," Head of the Services and Joint Affairs of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri said in a meeting with the deputy chief of staff of the Chinese army.

"We share similar positions on the US unilateralism and we are seeking formation of an Asian structure and development of the Shanghai Treaty," he added.

"The current conditions in the world necessitate strengthening and consolidating bilateral and multilateral defense and military cooperation," he added.

Chang also underscored the necessity for implementation of defensive agreements signed by the two countries.

Dehqan, for his part, pointed to Iran and China's highly successful experience in defensive cooperation, and said the two countries' determination to deepen cooperation can further reinvigorate their bonds and relations.

Iran and China have expanded relations in different trade, economic, military and scientific fields in recent years.

Iran, Russia or China are not going to send infantries to Syria but they're corporating very closely to clean the mess and wipe takfiri zombie terrorists from Syria.

Yes according the progress so far no boots on the ground are needed other than Syrian themselves, hope the mess be cleaned up asap! Intelligence sharing, both tech-based (Sat, UAV, cyber, etc) or human-based, will be one key area of support, after all the mess is quite complicated.

BTW, glad to arms co-operation back on the rise again, just like good old times!

LOOL You do know that China cooperates a lot with the so called 'Zionists' right?

China is expected to be Israel largest tech investor less than 4 years from now eclipsing even the U.S. So much for calling others to fight the 'zionists' for you. lol

I wont even go into too much details about your so called other 'friend' India close relationship with Israel, since you all know how close Israel is with India(as India's 3rd largest military supplier and a leading tech provider).

So as you can see each country looks after their interests, why make an enemy of another country when you can be friends with both?? You Iranians need to stop being so radical and seeing things as black and white. Geo politics doesn't works that way my friend. If it will benefit your country to cooperate/partner with another country then why not
? Doesn't matter who that country is as far as your interests match.

So don't see things from such a one sided view. Nobody is fighting against Israel for you,not Russia, not India and even less so China.

As for the Americans, U.S and China are each other largest trade partners and they co-operate in many fields that Iran can only dream of. That's how mature powers play politics. Not indulging in empty radical rhetoric which serves no purpose. You can cooperate and still be competing. The trick is to know when and how to compromise, and play your cards right while looking at the bigger picture/long term benefits. In this regard, i will say the Chinese have proven to be quite good at this game.:enjoy: They don't engage is useless provocation/aggression/rhetoric to be honest. which is quite mature for a power.:D

Iran should looking for Chinese made arm hardware , they had a lot of thing to offer and their quality nowadays is can't be compared with say two decades ago. Iran needed Chinese help to revamp their Navy especially in surface combatant (large warship, logistical vessel and so on), Iranian Navy is the most neglected branch in Iran armed forces....

I meant Syrian - Middesst takfiri terrorists and their Zionist American supporters.

Zionist and american supporters is what i also meant. China and India both have deep cooperation with these very same Zionist and Americans. So why does Iran still carry on its friendly' relations with these countries??lool
After all, anybody who cooperates with the Zionists should not be regarded s a friend of Iran isn't it?lol

Never mind that Iran has no business with the Zionists in the first place, its just that you people like poking your nose into Israel-Palestine bilateral issues, its none of your business last i checked. :D
