China's Avicopter Z-11WB light helicopter made its first flight in Jingdezhen, home of the Changhe Aircraft Industries Group, on 28 September.
The Z-11WB is the military version of the 2.2-tonne, six-passenger AC-311 light helicopter that first flew in November 2010.
This, in turn, is a development of the Avicopter Z-11, itself derived from the Eurocopter AS350 Ecureuil, now Airbus Helicopters H125. The major difference appears to be that the AC311 has a redesigned cockpit area likely inspired by the Airbus H120, also co-produced by Avicopter. The redesign increases visibility and uses multifunctional cockpit displays.
Chinese reports say the Z-11WB has military modifications in order to "carry out ground support, attack, battlefield reconnaissance, command, counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, counter-smuggling and other tasks." Early images show that it carries a lower-nose mounted electro-optical pod and has pylons for ordnance.
