China’s war drums beat

You can't blame Vietnam for siding with the Soviet, Soviet was a superpower with a military might but Vietnam Chess move backfire, they follow the bankrupt Soviet union and eventually left out in the cold with S.U collpased and file bankrupcy.

The US of the 1970s was badly hurt after the Vietnam War, while USSR didn't seize this opportunity to completely bury the wounded USA.

They also made another two mistakes:

1. To push China into the US side. During the Vietnam War, both PRC and USSR have helped to defend North Vietnam against USA. We became the brother in arms again. We thought this should be a good opportunity to rebuild the broken relationship with USSR since the Khrushchev era. But Brezhnev's imperial chauvinism was even more rude than Khrushchev's, they refused unless PRC accepted to submit them as a vassal state again. But we always wanted to become their partner, not their slave. Meanwhile Brezhnev's regime kept harassing China's fishermen on the border, then we fought back in 1969. Afterward, they threatened to nuke us. PRC has been pushed into the corner, we had no choice but to open our diplomatic relationship with the US. Meanwhile the US also needed to buildup a relationship with China in order to compensate its loss in the Vietnam War.

2. To start the war on Afghanistan. USSR obviously didn't learn the mistakes that the US made during the Vietnam War. With a weaker economy, they were destined to fail with so many foreign powers playing the proxy war against them during the battlefield in Afghanistan.

Without a sound economy, any kind of political idealogy can turn into a big joke. USSR think with a powerful military can force their idealogy onto other. The Afghanistan war did place a part to bankrupt the Soviet Union.

I think Vietnam should not make China as its enemy even it wanted to appease USSR.

North Korea didn't completely offend China even they were in the Soviet camp.

Maybe South Korea was the reason that they didn't act like Vietnam.

Soviet Union promise Vietnam the Communist glory with control of the IndoChina. Vietnam intention to challenge China in the region and be the sidekick of the Soviet Union. Vietnam bet on the wrong horse, the outcome was expected.

Good or bad Vietnam can't choose her neighboor why not find away to explore the resource together with China and have 50-50 share of what they find.

When both Vietnam and China relation on a good term, maybe China can offer 60-40 deal to Vietnam, China can get 40% and Vietnam get 60%. I believe Vietnam don't want to cooperate with China and used US to counter China in Asia.
Why would a small nation get bigger share? China can do the drilling by herself. What expertise can vietnam offer?

Vietnam can't offer you none but this territory still a disputed one, you want China take all the oil from the SCS without sharing with the nations live proximity to SCS? who will give in to your demand, China powerful but not that powerful without any nation match up the capacity to resist China on your claim the whole SCS to drill all the oil.

Don't allow your ego to swollen bigger than a melon.

A more powerful nation will give more to a smaller country who doesn't require the resources as much as the bigger nation, sure. in this world, it's always Big fish eat small fish. That's life.

Just a wishful thinking. Why not Vietnam hire western drillers and have them drill a few feet next to the Chinese! That would be a sight to see LOL.

Big fish eat small fish just like turn of the tide and the wind change of direction. Smaller nation united together can form a big formidable opponent. A colony of ants can consume the whole dead elephant.

Vietnam has been drilling illegally in disputed territories in scs for years.

You think China a big bad untouchable superpower nation, even the rest of the world stand no chance?

Wrong analogy. Vietnm-Philippines does not equal millions of ants. And the elephant is not dead. Even a rat can consume a dead tiger, if it's dead.
