That another beauty of our researchers. So young and already understand complex technological research. I cannot imagine what their mind will be once they reach their prime age which is around 40-60.
you are perfectly right. For example, the Gaofeng satellites team, the average age is only 35-years old! Hard to imagine their achievements in 10years!!

They are the generation (to which I humbly belong to) that will see China's transition to an all-around global superpower in few decades. The only threat is complacence and laziness.

How will quantum communication change life?
(Xinhua) August 14, 2016

BEIJING, Aug. 14 - The imminent launch of the world's first quantum communication satellite is widely believed to herald a breakthrough in China's development of quantum technology.

Mysterious and confusing, the study of minute particles smaller than atoms has been applied in fields as diverse as computer processing, lasers and nuclear technology.

How will quantum communication change our lives - especially in the age of cyber attacks, wiretapping and information leakage?

SUPER PROCESSING ABILITY

Based on the quantum phenomenon that a tiny particle acts as if it's simultaneously in two locations, quantum computing could dwarf the processing power of today's supercomputers.

In normal silicon computer chips, data is rendered in one of two states: 0 or 1. However, in quantum computers, data could exist in both states simultaneously, holding exponentially more information.

One analogy to explain the concept of quantum computing is that it is like being able to read all the books in a library at the same time, whereas conventional computing is like having to read them one after another.

Scientists say that a problem that takes Tianhe-2, one of the fastest super computers in China, 100 years to solve might take a quantum computer just one hundredth of a second.

Many countries have invested heavily in the research and development of such computers.

In July 2015, a quantum-computing lab jointly established by Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Internet giant Alibaba opened in Shanghai. The lab is expected to produce a general-purpose quantum computer prototype with 50 to 100 quantum bits by 2030.

HACK-PROOF COMMUNUCATION

Such powerful computing ability is also viewed as a threat in that it could make everything on a conventional computer hackable.

However, like a coin with two sides, quantum mechanics also serves as protector of information. Quantum key technology boasts ultra-high security as a photon can be neither separated nor duplicated, so it is impossible to wiretap or intercept the information transmitting through it.

Moreover, it has the ability to inform the two communicating users of the presence of any third party trying to eavesdrop. At the same time, the information being intercepted would "collapse" or self-destruct.

China will launch the world's first quantum communication satellite in a matter of days. If the satellite works well, it will pave the way to a hack-proof communication system.

Meanwhile, China will complete and put into operation the world's first secure quantum communication backbone network, the Beijing-Shanghai backbone network, later this year, according to Pan Jianwei, academician of Chinese Academy of Science and chief scientist of quantum communication satellite project.

The 2,000-kilometer backbone network will be used in the fields of finance, electronics and government affairs.

The satellite and the ground-based network will ensure the secure passage of information, Pan said.

Pan reckoned that quantum communication would enter everyday life in about 10 years, securing online banking and payments.

Ok, how about quantum satellite? When US is going to launch one. 2099?

Quantum Communications is one area where China sincerely beats US.

But the issue is that EU, Austria in particular is pretty advanced in quantum communications, so US would anyways have the lee way to invite and transfer all knowledge if they so desire.

China to make new breakthrough in quantum communication
Xinhua, October 19, 2017

Chinese researchers will soon make a new breakthrough in quantum communication after the world's first 2,000-km quantum communication line between Beijing and Shanghai went into operation in September, a senior university official said.

The team led by Pan Jianwei from the Chinese Academy of Sciences has continued deep research to optimize the transmission of the quantum communication line so a jam will not occur when the number of users increases, said Xu Wu, Communist Party chief of the University of Science and Technology of China based in Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui Province.

Due to the attenuation of optical fiber, relay stations are needed to extend the distance of quantum communication. There are more than 30 relay stations, with an average distance of about 80 km between them, on the Beijing-Shanghai line.

The research team is working to extend the distance between two stations to 300 or 500 km to cut the number of relay stations and consequently the overall cost, said Xu, one of the more than 2,200 delegates to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which opened Wednesday in Beijing.

A breakthrough will be made in this regard in the near future, said the Party official, whose university is applying for a national laboratory in the quantum field.

Quantum communication has ultra-high security. It is impossible to wiretap, intercept or crack the information transmitted through this means.

The Beijing-Shanghai quantum communication line is connected to the world's first quantum satellite, which was launched by China in August last year, through a station in Beijing. The satellite is nicknamed Micius after a fifth century B.C. Chinese philosopher and scientist who has been credited as the first person to conduct optical experiments.

As it is a new type of communication, the line's operation might come across problems. The team will try to solve problems through further research to make the line better meet the needs of the country and the users, said Xu.
