ZTE forecasts 43% rise in first-half net profit as 4G LTE projects drive growth

ZTE Corporation, a major international provider of telecommunications, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the Mobile Internet, expects the company to report a 43% increase in net profit for the first six months as a result of stronger sales of 4G LTE network systems.

Net profit attributable to holders of ordinary shares in the listed company is projected to be RMB 1.61 billion (US$260 million) in the first six months, according to preliminary results announcement issued by ZTE today. Operating revenue is projected to increase 21.9% to RMB45.94billion in the first half, from a year earlier. First-half operating profit is expected to grow 132%.

In the first half, ZTE increased revenue from sales of FDD-LTE network systems, in addition to wireline switch and access systems, while contract profitability improved. Revenue in the Enterprise and Government ICT Solutions division also posted growth, driven by new Smart City deployments and higher sales to rail operators. Gross profit in the first half increased.

Expenses of the Group for the reporting period as a percentage of operating revenue remained largely unchanged as compared to the same period of the previous year. The increase in research and development costs as a percentage of operating revenue was mainly attributable to the ongoing increase in the Group’s R&D investment in products such as LTE, bearer network, SDN and GPON to support long-term development. Meanwhile, selling and distribution costs and administrative expenses as a percentage of operating revenue decreased year-on-year following enhanced cost management by the Group.

Huawei Honor 4A Officially Introduced with 5-Inch HD Display, 8MP Camera, 2GB RAM

The smartphone cost only $110 (€100) outright

The Honor 4A was spotted no later than yesterday at TENAA, the Chinese regulatory commission, one day before its official announcement.

Huawei confirmed last week it will launch a new cheap Android smartphone today, but did not offer any details on the phone's specs.

True to its promise, the Chinese company officially unveiled its Honor 4A smartphone, which is an affordable device that packs more than decent specs for the price you pay.

First of all, GizmoChina reports Huawei Honor 4A is now available for purchase in China for just 599 yuan ($95 / €90) for the 3G model, or for 699 yuan ($110 / €100) for the 4G LTE version.

Unfortunately, there's no telling whether or not Huawei will make the Honor 4A available outside China anytime soon. If the company decides to do that, the smartphone will certainly become one of the most popular Android devices, especially in emerging markets.

The Honor 4A could sell very well in India if Huawei decides to make it available in this country in the not so distant future.

Lollipop and 2GB RAM are its strongest points

Moving on to specs, Huawei Honor 4A ships with Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system right out of the box along with the company's proprietary Emotion UI 3.1 on top.

Hardware-wise, the smartphone is equipped with a 1.1GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor, 2GB of RAM and only 8GB of internal memory, which can be further expanded up to 32GB via microSD card slot.

The Honor 4A sports a decent 5-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports HD (720p) resolution. It also features a 8-megapixel camera on the back with autofocus, LED flash and video recording, as well as a secondary 2-megapixel camera in the front.

Last but not least, Huawei's affordable smartphone is powered by a 2,200 mAh battery with fast charging, and offers dual-SIM support among other connectivity options.

Huawei Technologies' H1 smartphone revenue more than doubles in China

HONG KONG/BEIJING

BY YIMOU LEE AND GERRY SHIH

Huawei Technologies Co Ltd [HWT.UL] more than doubled its China smartphone revenue in the first half of 2015, defying a slowdown in the world's biggest handset market that is enveloping rivals Xiaomi Inc [XTC.UL] and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS).

The fourth-largest smartphone maker globally missed shipment targets for two years, but a focus shift to high-margin premium models pushed January-June worldwide shipments to 48.2 million phones, Huawei said on Wednesday. That puts it on course to move 100 million mobiles this year, 33 percent more than last.

The turnaround comes almost three years after Shenzhen-based Huawei decided to shed its budget appeal and challenge Samsung and Apple Inc (AAPL.O) at the high-end of the market, where analysts said an increasing number of previously price-conscious Chinese consumers are willing to spend their money.

In contrast to Huawei, overall smartphone shipments in China shrank for the first time in six years in the first quarter, and one-time leader Xiaomi booked its first fall in sequential semi-annual sales, saying the domestic market is nearing saturation.

"There's that buzz going around Huawei in China right now and it's being increasingly associated with better product quality," said Bryan Ma, researcher IDC's Asia-Pacific vice president. "It's quite dramatic how successful they've been."

Behind that success is convincing Chinese consumers that it is worth paying more for its feature-packed yet moderately priced devices, Ma said. Its first-quarter average selling price jumped to $222 from $128 a year earlier, he said.

Huawei's consumer business group, which includes its smartphone division, booked global revenue of $9.09 billion for the first six months, up 69 percent on year, and raised its year-end goal to $20 billion from $16 billion. In China, where it sells most of its mobiles, phone revenue rose 124 percent.

UNEXPECTEDLY HIGH GROWTH

On Monday, head of consumer business Richard Yu in a memo touted the success of Huawei's high-end P8. The handset is priced in China well below premium models from rivals such as Samsung, which fell out of China's top three in the first quarter for the first time since 2011.

"The consumer business group recorded an unexpectedly high rate of growth," Yu wrote without elaborating. Huawei's consumer business division makes electronic goods such as smartphones, smartwatches, tablet computers and modems.

Analysts said Huawei's sales growth may not be down to company strategy alone, and that it may have benefited from pricing or distribution missteps at competitors.

But now Huawei's fast-growing Honor sub-brand has copied Xiaomi's online distribution model, the triple-digit growth rates Xiaomi has enjoyed in China in recent years may be under threat, said Strategy Analytics executive director Neil Mawston.

"They're cutting into Xiaomi's competitive edge," he said.

Smartphone processor sales climb, players ranked

By: Peter Clarke | electronics-eetimes | Posted: 24 Jul 2015, 09:44

The market for application processors for smartphones jumped by 20 percent in 1Q15 compared with a year before, while the same market for tablet computers fell 6 percent in 1Q15 on the same basis, according to Strategy Analytics.

Bigger smartphone displays and the creation of the so-called phablet product category are one explanation of the contrasting fortunes compared with the tablet processor market, which would then depend on how phablets are classified.

The 20 percent annual growth took the smartphone application processor market up to a quarterly value of $5.3 billion. The top five vendors were ranked in order Qualcomm, Apple, MediaTek, Samsung and Spreadtrum. Qualcomm led the market with 47 percent revenue share, followed by Apple with 16 percent and MediaTek with 15 percent.

Qualcomm was hit by slow adoption of is flagship Snapdragon 810 and increased competition which dragged its market share down from 55 percent in the same quarter a year before. This can be seen, in part, for dropping quarterly sales at Qualcomm and a restructuring recently announced (see Qualcomm to cut 15% of staff, could be broken up).

The success stories in the smartphone AP market were HiSilicon, Intel and Samsung which all more than doubled their shipment growth in 1Q15, according to Stuart Robinson, an analyst with Strategy Analytics. Samsung capitalized on strong demand for its Exynos processors fabricated using its 14nm FinFET process, which featured Samsung;'s Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones, Strategy Analytics said.
