WASHINGTON: Seven out of 10 Americans say what happens in China is vitally important to the US, while for India it is just three out of 10, the latest Gallup opinion poll has said.

As a result, China is placed on the top of the list of 12 countries, and India at the bottom, while Afghanistan 6th, Pakistan 8th and Egypt 9th.

Russia, the other super power of the Cold War years, is a ranked a spot ahead of India.

Gallup asked Americans to rate the importance of countries in this way in February 2007.

Americans' views of Iraq's importance have shown the greatest change over the last four years, dropping to 52 per cent "vitally important" today from 70 per cent in 2007, when Iraq topped the list.

At that time, President George W Bush had just announced his "surge" strategy in Iraq in response to deteriorating conditions there, and his party had suffered significant losses in the 2006 midterm elections, partly as a result of the debate over Iraq.

Now, with American combat troops withdrawn from that country and attention shifted to Afghanistan and other hot spots around the world, Iraq has slipped to 5th place, Gallup said.

In 2007, India was again ranked last in the list of 12 countries, but at that time only 28 per cent of the Americans considered India as a vitally important country, as against 31 per cent now.

"Americans' views that events in China are vitally important to the US have increased by 12 percentage points since 2007, putting China where Iraq was four years ago," it said, adding the importance of China in the average American's eyes likely reflects continuing awareness of the economic influence of China on the US and world economies.

Americans in general tend to over-estimate our economic power.

I saw a survey that showed that most Americans believed that China is the number one largest economy in the world. When in fact... we are a distant second behind the US.

India's importance needs to be verified by Americans? Lol...
The author will be scolded, if he is a Chinese. China's importance not needs to be verified by other countries.

reason is china is americas new competitor, russia is still powerful enough question america, pakistan and afghan etc - america got direct military presence lot of man money and prestige involved..center points of war on terror.
egypt etc got american puppets as head of the state or countries which are remote controlled by america.

In india there is no direct american involvement..that's what i think.

Don't tell me you actually want to climb that ladder?

The article talks about importance of countries TO the United States. Of course that has to be decided by Americans, not you and me.

@Topic: Is that really that much of a surprise? China is propping up the American economy by buying their currency and being their largest trade partner. Of course China is the most important to Americans.

i don't..specially with americans..if it was russia i would love india to be closest alley.

Your policy makers do. thats what matters.

as far as Indian importance for US is concerned it is only linked with China.

as long as China is important for US there will be not much for India.

besides if US is threatened by Chinese growth then be sure US will be threatened by Indian growth too.

so a complex situation

I can tell you right here what the top 3 are going to be. It is Pakistan, China and the US in no particular order.

hence this will motivate the masses. a coach will never tell his team they are the best... the players will let it get to their heads and become complacent. you got to keep the masses on their toes...hence you always create a "fear" factor...china and the US do this well

its truly ashamed that the Indian's media keep on feeding the Indians masses on the notion of "india superpower", this make the masses become detached from reality. some leader india need to tell the masses..."hey were a far far behind the chinese and americans, and they will eat our children's lunch if we dont work hard now" instead of " obama said India has arrived on the world stage...yippie yippie doo!!!"

Do you really think American politics needs more anger? Their whole system is design to incite anger and deflect responsibility.
