The 500m telescope will dwarf the world's current largest in Puerto Rico

China is preparing to relocate nearly 10,000 people to make way for the world's largest radio telescope.

Residents will be moved from their homes in the south-western province of Guizhou to prevent interference with the telescope's electromagnetism.

The project's lead scientists told China's state news agency that the telescope would further the search for intelligent life in the universe.

It will dwarf the world's current largest such telescope in Puerto Rico.

The 500m-wide Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) is due to be operational this year.

Provincial officials have vowed to relocate 9,110 residents living within five kilometres of the listening device by September, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The relocations will "create a sound electromagnetic wave environment", the news agency cited regional official Li Yuecheng as saying.

Residents will reportedly receive 12,000 yuan (£1,280; $1,800) in subsidies for their troubles, with some getting extra support for housing, it said.

FAST, built at a cost of 1.2bn yuan, will dwarf the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico as the world's largest radio telescope, which is about 300m in diameter.

Wu Xiangping, director-general of the Chinese Astronomical Society, said the telescope's high level of sensitivity "will help us to search for intelligent life outside of the galaxy", Xinhua reported.

In the past China has relocated hundreds of thousands of people to make way for large infrastructure projects such as dams and canals. Many have complained of poor compensation.

As well as upping investment in astronomy, Beijing is accelerating its multi-billion-dollar space exploration programme, with plans for a permanent orbiting station by 2020.

Wasn't this in battlefield 4 map? :L

I would not poke around the galaxy looking for other intelligent lifeforms. Remember what happened to the North American natives that were found by the more technologically advanced European colonists?

Incorrect, local government is building houses for those villagers.
The houses will be built before September.
Gov-built houses are usually very beautiful, like those houses in Wenchuan,Qingchuan and Beichuan.

Okay,okay.
At least my friends whose houses were removed got a large amount of money and houses.
In junior middle school, friend's family owned 9 houses.
In senior middle school, friend's family got 2 or 3 I can't remember apartments and 300k yuan, while her family's old house dismantled.

Plz remember that Chinese government has built many apartments for those who used to live in slum :p

Like in Three Gouge Dam project, more than 1.2 Million people need to relocate, the largest in the history of mankind. The government provided free new housing and new jobs, but some of them just treated the relocation as once in life time opportunity to get really rich, like those you mentioned in those city renovation projects or in infrastructure projects. Most people are happy with the compensation package their got from the government, but a few percentage of them would never be happy. There are some who are just not used to city life.

The telescope China is building is for the benefit of mankind, and astronomers from all over the world will be able to use the most advanced tool to search unknown universe. But the west will never miss any opportunity to bash China, no matter what China dose, just because we are "commie" and we are orientals.

India is facing the similar issue with land requisitions, so Modi administration is trying hard to pass land bill, but so far in vain. Until the bill is passed, there will be hardly any significant infrastructure building in India, let alone the speed and the scale of infrastructure building in China that we have been witnessing in the past few decades.

more than 10000,maybe 15000,the porject of building new houses is already done.
