Size gives you the range. F-14 and A-6 are all huge and exceptional range. You are not going to do magical wonder on a smaller airframe for range and loitering time.

J-16 is almost same size as F-14 but with far more superior thrust.

F-14 variants were equipped with 2 x GE F110 engines at some point (131 kN + 131 kN = 262 kN combined thrust rating with After Burner).

Thrust is important for moving (and granting maneuverability to) very large airframes. Engine technology and reliability are more instructive considerations in general. For EW role, the onboard power supply system is another aspect.

GE F110 created an engine standard to be followed in the entire world when it was rolled out.
