A farewell to Liu Xiang 刘翔
The men’s 110m hurdles is always a special event at the Shanghai Diamond League meeting, usually providing a fittingly close-fought climax to a thrilling night’s athletics.
This year, however, the moment the world’s best sprint hurdlers settle into their blocks for the evening’s final contest will be a particularly poignant one, not just because of the quality of the men about to fly over the 10 barriers in pursuit of Diamond League points, but because of one man who will never do it again.
That man, of course, is Liu Xiang, Shanghai’s most famous and successful track and field prodigy, who announced his retirement from competitive action just one month ago after finally accepting defeat in his three-year battle against injury.
Liu’s connection with the Shanghai Stadium goes all the way back to the very start of his career in 1999, just two years after it was built, when he raced here as a raw 15-year-old yet to break 14 seconds.
The following year he did just that, clocking 13.90 at China’s National Games in Jinzhou to set a world best for 16-year-olds, thus announcing himself on the world athletics stage which he has graced ever since with his fluent style and feather-light speed.
Liu’s performances over the years which followed read like a rapidly sketched run-down of the sport’s major honours and achievements.
In 2001, running in Shanghai, he lowered his best to 13.32, the fastest ever by a 17-year-old, and won both the East Asian Games in Osaka and the World University Games in Beijing, while he reached the semi-finals of the senior World Championships in Edmonton.
In 2002 he ventured onto the global circuit for the first time, competing across Europe and South America. Still only 18, he added the world junior record (for under 20s) to his growing tally, running 13.12 in Lausanne – also a world best for an 18 or 19-year-old – having previously clocked a world junior record for 60m hurdles during the indoor season.
By 2003 he was already a serious contender for senior honours and he finished the year with a brace bronze medals from the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham and the IAAF World Championships in Paris.
But it was his Olympic performance the following year that sealed Liu’s name in the annals of Chinese athletics when he matched Colin Jackson’s 11-year-old world record of 12.91 to win gold in Athens, beating silver medallist Terence Trammell by almost three-tenths of a second. He was only the sixth man ever to run under 13 seconds and became China’s first Olympic champion in a men’s track and field event.
Liu instantly became a star – not just in China where he has been fêted ever since – but across the world too. He had not only defied the clock, and his more fancied US rivals, but upset traditional thinking about Asian athletes.
Liu himself – still a 21-year-old student at East China Normal University – put his achievement into context when he said that his gold medal “changes the opinion that Asian countries don’t get good results in sprint races. I want to prove to all the world that Asians can run very fast.”
He went on proving it in the years which followed, picking up a world outdoor silver in Helsinki in 2005, plus Asian and East Asian Games titles later that year. He finally smashed the world record in 2006 running 12.88, again in Lausanne, before winning gold at the Asian Games in Doha – his 10th win in 12 races that year.
The world outdoor title eventually arrived in 2007 when he clocked 12.95 in Osaka, setting him up perfectly, it seemed, for the defence of his Olympic crown on home soil in Beijing’s Birds’ Nest stadium 12 months later.
The fairy-tale seemed too good not come true – here was China’s biggest sporting superstar, the world record holder and world champion, defending his Olympic title in front of 90,000 of his own fans, in the world’s most iconic arena at his capital city’s first ever Olympic Games.
The expectations heaped on Liu’s young shoulders were huge. He was, quite simply, the host nation’s big hope – only hope – for a gold medal in the Games’s number one sport. All of which made the deep disappointment all the more intense when Liu walked off the track before his first-round heat on 18 August with a previousy unreported Achilles tendon injury.
If there had been any question about Liu’s national status beforehand, the crowd’s stunned silence and the enveloping sense of national confusion, even mourning, which followed for days after his withdrawal, left no doubt.
It turned out that Liu had been carrying the injury for six or seven weeks, and he was to carry it, on and off, for the next seven years. He was out of action completely for 13 months before returning at the 2009 Shanghai Golden Grand Prix.
He eventually won another global medal at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu when Dayron Robles – the Cuban who had taken his Olympic title and world record – was disquallified, and he broke an Asian indoor record for 60m hurdles at the start of 2012.
But his good form leading up to the Olympics that year came to nothing when the injury curse struck again as he took off at the first hurdle in his opening heat on the first day of athletics at the London Games. Liu’s fans went into mourning once again.
There was to be no Olympic redemption and, despite three years of operations and rehabilitation, Liu never recovered.
His retirement at 31, announced on 7 April this year, was greeted by words of sadness and appreciation from the world’s best sprint hurdlers. The Moscow world champion, David Oliver, described the news as “very sad” before adding: “I would like to say to him to keep his head up, and to take solace in the fact that he had a career that many people can only dream of. He left the track having accomplished everything there is to accomplish.”
There are few who would argue with that, least of all the Shanghai public who will get one last chance to show their appreciation of their favourite sporting son at this year’s IAAF Diamond League meeting on 17 May when there will be a special ceremony to honour and bid farewell to the one and only Liu Xiang.

自从上个月，刘翔微博宣布退役，写下长文《我的跑道我的栏》。人们期待他亲口向奋斗近20年的田径场挥手告别，给支持自己多年的观众一个交代。于是，刘翔选择了家乡上海，选择了著名的八万人体育场，选择了国际田联钻石联赛。
这座城市、这块场地、这项比赛，见证了翔飞人的起飞、和伤愈后的涅槃。他在上海开启了跨栏生涯，也决定在此结束。有句歌词写道：“起点和终点，其实只是一步距离。”刘翔的选择，颇有深意。
昨晚，钻石联赛结束后，赛事方特意留下了10个栏架。体育场的大屏幕，以影像方式回顾刘翔19年的田径生涯。仅两分钟左右的短片，包括了刘翔生涯的每一次重要节点：2000年世界青年锦标赛冠军、2003年巴黎世锦赛第三、2004年雅典奥运一飞冲天夺冠、2006年瑞士洛桑打破世界纪录夺冠、2007年大阪世锦赛的第九道奇迹。至此，刘翔的职业生涯接近完美。

当刘翔说到：“作为一名运动员，我真的倍感荣幸。上海是我的家，也是我的田径梦想开始的地方。”这时，他突然停了下来，眼圈微红。刘翔说过，自己有多热爱这块田径场，多热爱那块栏架。无论多么相熟的记者，也没法像他本人那样明白，梦想对刘翔到底意味着什么。
尤其是这句：“我想告诉大家的是，在我个人职业运动生涯中。碰到过困难、挫折和对手时，我从来没有退缩过、逃避过、害怕过，始终尽我所能，去努力、去挑战、去拼搏。在这里，真的有点激动。”
这可以算是刘翔最接近直接回应两次奥运退赛质疑的表达，尽管他没直接提起那件事。多年来，这两次退赛几乎是他生涯里唯一的“意外”，却被看成是刘翔犯下的不可饶恕的错误。

有媒体评论，刘翔作为超级偶像，成功时荣誉缠身、失败时声名倒地、退役时褒贬不一，这些现实让人唏嘘，也让人思考。作为中国体育不世出的天才运动员，刘翔恐怕是一个不可复制的符号，具有划时代的意义。在他之前，体育明星从未如此备受瞩目；在他之后，人们对体育偶像的崇拜势必更趋于理性和客观。

Liu Xiang reduced his fans to tears in his home Shanghai Stadium on Sunday as China’s finest athlete was given a fittingly heartfelt send-off at the conclusion of one of the sport’s most pioneering careers.
Liu’s lips seemed to wobble with emotion at a ceremony to mark his achievements at the end of the Diamond League meeting.
“I’ve been very honoured to be an athlete," he told his adoring followers. "I’m very happy that today I have an opportunity to say goodbye.
"I have been moved by your concern for me, your understanding and your encouragement. I am grateful and very honoured.”
Even his hurdling opponents, who got used to chasing the man who achieved the rare triple crown of being a world record breaker, world and Olympic champion, flocked to be involved in the tribute, joining Liu in a lap of honour.
Liu, who had been plagued by injuries, finally gave up any hope of a comeback at the age of 31 last month but he plans to play a role in the future of Chinese athletics.
On Sunday, he watched two of China's leading women, shot putter Gong Lijiao and javelin thrower Lu Huihui, triumph.
"Today, I support my friends (Chinese athletes) with every step, with every hurdle," he said.
"I am convinced that from today we will have even more athletes who are even more outstanding.”
Earlier, world champion David Oliver had won the 110 metres hurdles, the climax to the track programme, in 13.17 seconds, after a thrilling battle with Cuban Orlando Ortega.
Yet American Oliver was not bothered that his thunder was to be completely stolen by Liu.
"Being a part of something as momentous as Liu’s retirement was a great honour for me," he said.
"To see him now at the end of his career was pretty emotional. I could see for him it was too. I could see people in the crowd were crying. He meant a lot to the Chinese community.”
To world athletics too.
For although Liu suffered cruel misfortune at the London and -- more gallingly -- the Beijing Olympics, those disappointments could not conceal his trailblazing spirit.
"I want to prove to all the world that Asians can run very fast,” he once said.
He did just that, his monument standing as that world record run of 12.88 seconds in Lausanne nine years ago, still the third fastest ever.

昨晚，钻石联赛结束后，赛事方特意留下了10个栏架。体育场的大屏幕，以影像方式回顾刘翔19年的田径生涯。仅两分钟左右的短片，包括了刘翔生涯的每一次重要节点：2000年世界青年锦标赛冠军、2003年巴黎世锦赛第三、2004年雅典奥运一飞冲天夺冠、2006年瑞士洛桑打破世界纪录夺冠、2007年大阪世锦赛的第九道奇迹。至此，刘翔的职业生涯接近完美。
短片的后半段，气氛变得压抑，让人心痛的回忆再次被唤起：2008年北京奥运会因伤退赛、2011年大邱世锦赛遭遇打手事件、2012年尤金平世界纪录却超风速、2012年伦敦奥运会因伤退赛。
短片放映过程中，全场寂静，刘翔本人一言不发。他聚精会神地重温着每一个熟悉的过往，嘴角微笑着从人群中走出。似乎，他已经准备好，平静面对这段回忆，坦然说出一句告别。
全国直播竟转身背对镜头 刘翔真的动了情
只见，刘翔拿起话筒，开口的瞬间，他开始犹豫，他深深吸了一口气，再努力吐了出来。这时，面对全国直播的镜头，他竟然转过身去，留给全世界一个背影。
之后：所有人都看到了以下一幕：刘翔背对着镜头，用手使劲擦了擦眼睛，顿了一下，再转身回来，眼圈已经泛红。刘翔动情了。
自从出道以来，刘翔一直以阳光大男孩的形象示人。除此之外，他过人的表达能力，也一直被人津津乐道。11年过去了，他夺得雅典奥运会金牌后的那段即兴讲话，依旧是经典中的经典。正是那段话，赐予他一个崇高的光环，甚至被誉为体育场上的“民族英雄”。

5次哽咽背后的苦涩：句句戳中了他内心最柔软部分
粗略统计，刘翔的发言共有711个字，说了将近6分钟，语速很慢。其中，他因为哽咽停下5次，每次背后都似乎有话想说。
当刘翔说到：“作为一名运动员，我真的倍感荣幸。上海是我的家，也是我的田径梦想开始的地方。”这时，他突然停了下来，眼圈微红。刘翔说过，自己有多热爱这块田径场，多热爱那块栏架。无论多么相熟的记者，也没法像他本人那样明白，梦想对刘翔到底意味着什么。
尤其是这句：“我想告诉大家的是，在我个人职业运动生涯中。碰到过困难、挫折和对手时，我从来没有退缩过、逃避过、害怕过，始终尽我所能，去努力、去挑战、去拼搏。在这里，真的有点激动。”
这可以算是刘翔最接近直接回应两次奥运退赛质疑的表达，尽管他没直接提起那件事。多年来，这两次退赛几乎是他生涯里唯一的“意外”，却被看成是刘翔犯下的不可饶恕的错误。
说这段话时，刘翔哽咽了两次。但同时，他在说“没有退缩、逃避”这几个词时，着重提高了音量。

退役仪式的结尾，刘翔与恩师孙海平拥抱、与奥利弗、谢文骏、理查德森等昔日的对手一一拥抱。他小跑着绕场一周，不止一次向四面看台鞠躬致意，不舍离去。现场主持人张斌说：“祝愿你平顺地度过未来的人生。”
那一刻，刘翔就像即将毕业的大学生，挥手对母校作别——未来，你可以随时回母校看看，却再也不是学生的身份。刘翔深知，今天以后，他将以各种不同的身份走入场地，除了运动员。不妨猜想，就在那一刻，刘翔的眼睛里，都是19年前的回忆：一个青涩的自己，好奇地走向跑道，紧张地准备起跑。
短片里，国际田联主席迪亚克评价，刘翔是所有人的榜样。国家体育总局田管中心主任杜兆才说，刘翔是中国田径不朽的传奇。
不过，网络上，关于刘翔的评论仍然“争吵不休”。有人感谢他为中国体育带来的荣誉、有人祝福他未来好运、有人指责他退役仪式办的过于隆重、也有人再次质疑退赛的背后是否另有隐情。
有媒体评论，刘翔作为超级偶像，成功时荣誉缠身、失败时声名倒地、退役时褒贬不一，这些现实让人唏嘘，也让人思考。作为中国体育不世出的天才运动员，刘翔恐怕是一个不可复制的符号，具有划时代的意义。在他之前，体育明星从未如此备受瞩目；在他之后，人们对体育偶像的崇拜势必更趋于理性和客观。

Liu Xiang reduced his fans to tears in his home Shanghai Stadium on Sunday as China’s finest athlete was given a fittingly heartfelt send-off at the conclusion of one of the sport’s most pioneering careers.
Liu’s lips seemed to wobble with emotion at a ceremony to mark his achievements at the end of the Diamond League meeting.
“I’ve been very honoured to be an athlete," he told his adoring followers. "I’m very happy that today I have an opportunity to say goodbye.
"I have been moved by your concern for me, your understanding and your encouragement. I am grateful and very honoured.”
Even his hurdling opponents, who got used to chasing the man who achieved the rare triple crown of being a world record breaker, world and Olympic champion, flocked to be involved in the tribute, joining Liu in a lap of honour.
Liu, who had been plagued by injuries, finally gave up any hope of a comeback at the age of 31 last month but he plans to play a role in the future of Chinese athletics.
On Sunday, he watched two of China's leading women, shot putter Gong Lijiao and javelin thrower Lu Huihui, triumph.
"Today, I support my friends (Chinese athletes) with every step, with every hurdle," he said.
"I am convinced that from today we will have even more athletes who are even more outstanding.”
Earlier, world champion David Oliver had won the 110 metres hurdles, the climax to the track programme, in 13.17 seconds, after a thrilling battle with Cuban Orlando Ortega.
Yet American Oliver was not bothered that his thunder was to be completely stolen by Liu.
"Being a part of something as momentous as Liu’s retirement was a great honour for me," he said.
"To see him now at the end of his career was pretty emotional. I could see for him it was too. I could see people in the crowd were crying. He meant a lot to the Chinese community.”
To world athletics too.
For although Liu suffered cruel misfortune at the London and -- more gallingly -- the Beijing Olympics, those disappointments could not conceal his trailblazing spirit.
"I want to prove to all the world that Asians can run very fast,” he once said.
He did just that, his monument standing as that world record run of 12.88 seconds in Lausanne nine years ago, still the third fastest ever.

We are doing fine in some world or regional sports but still we are painfully the constant absentees from many big ticket events like at the pinnacle tournaments in football, golf, tennis, basketball, ice hockey, motor car races, yatcht races, some track and field events, rugby, hockey ...
The reason for me in creating this thread and to keep adding fuel to it is because China can be seen in a lot many other lights than the stereotypes

EUGENE, United States, May 30 (Xinhua) -- China's sprinter Su Bingtian became the first Asian-born to officially beat the 10.00 seconds barrier in the men's 100 meters.
In Saturday's Eugene Grand Prix, the 1.71m-tall runner finished third in 9.99 seconds, behind American Tyson Gay in 9.88 and Mike Rodgers in 9.90.
"I am so proud for my result. I can write my name into history now and will work harder and run faster," said the 25-year-old.
Although Qatar's Nigerian-born Femi Ogunode became the fastest man on the continent in last year's Asian Games when he clocked 9.93 seconds in the 100 meters, Asian-born athletes had been working hard for years to beat 10 seconds barrier until Su.
Previously, China's Zhang Peimeng, who raced to his personal best of 10.00 in 2013 Moscow world championships, is considered the closest to beating the barrier, together with Japanese teenager Yoshihide Kiryu, who ran a wind-assisted unofficial 9.87 at a meet in Austin, Texas in March.
Su was filled with confidence and started to set his sight on "creating miracles" for China in August's world championships at the famous "Bird's Nest" National Stadium in Beijing.
"This is definitely a huge boost for me. Last time in Moscow, Zhang Peimeng was ranked ninth with 10 seconds, which made me feel that we are very close to entering the top eight and beating 10 seconds," he said.
"I hope in this year's world championships, I can work some miracles for my country in 100m and 4x100m relay," he said.
China's world and Olympics 110m hurdles champion Liu Xiang witnessed Su's record-breaking performance.
"You are great! You are great!" said Liu, who announced retirement in May.

He was not beaten by much in the race. In fact he was leading the pack in the first 50m and he was the smallest guy among all the sprinters
