Well, I'm not surprised. My Seagate laptop HDD that was made in China is nearly 7 y/o and works flawless since day 1. China can seriously make some good hi-tech stuff...

Instead of looking far into the future, let's look at the present moment or last recorded year. China was already far bigger than any country on this planet in terms of patent filings (31% of world total, 2014), industrial design filings (49% of world total, 2014), industrial GDP ($4.422 trillion, 2014), manufacturing VA ($3.713 trillion, 2014), merchandise exports to rest-of-the-world ($2.343 trillion, 2014), high-tech exports to rest-of-the-world ($560 billion, 2013), trade surpluses with rest-of-the-world ($382 billion in 2014; my estimate for 2015 is $600 billion), gross domestic savings, financial reserves, sovereign welfare fund, and many more indicators. China mainland alone is the second largest creditor nation (the opposite of debtor nation) after Japan, Greater China (+HK +TW) combined number one largest.

However it's not about overtaking anything, but to make China as well as partnering countries more prosperous, especially friends like Pakistan. All the best bro!

Thanks, certainly there are fields that China is catching up, like robotics as you have mentioned.

By end 2014 in terms of total operational stock of industrial robots, China Mainland (189,358 units; excluding 43,484 units of Taiwan) ranks second largest globally, about 2/3 that of Japan (295,829 units), slightly ahead of South Korea (176,833) and Germany (175,768).

However in terms of density (robots installed per 10,000 workers), China Mainland is still far below that of South Korea (478, world highest), Japan (314) or Germany (292). China Mainland has been growing fast, added 57,096 units last year, representing a quarter of world total. By this year China Mainland should have reached 90% of Japan in total stock, this massive expansion in robotics is expected to persist till 2018 as per IFR.
