China Surpasses Japan as Asia's Top High-Tech Exporter, ADB Says

WELL DONE CHINA!!!!!!GO CHINA GO! Prediction: Within 10 years China will be the only non-western nation that can indigenously produced from scratch high-tech and advanced equipment both military and civilian to the same standard as that of the americans. No Asian or any other non-white nation will even come remotely close to achieving this feat. Just like the advanced western nations, China will be the only non-white nation to become a PIONEER of advanced science and technology and not a copier of it.

Thanks bro for the compliment! China is already number one largest pioneer in patent filings, check the data. However as I mentioned in the other thread, China is still behind Korea and Japan in (1) patent per capita, and (2) number of top applicants.

We might be able to have more companies in Global Top 100, however it will be mission impossible to match per capita patent.

Not only that, my friend, he puts unnecessary glorification on the general term "white nations". As if the rest of Asia, Africa, Latin America or "non white nations" were somewhat inferior.

Ludicrous.

.
Why do you erroneously put so much elevation to 'white' nation(s) on their abilities?

Is Bulgaria, Serbia, Belgium, great technological powers? What is with your colonial minded attribution of superiority to white people?

Lol......it's not that. I meant the advanced white western nations. At the moment, for the last 400 years or so the pioneers of advanced science and technology have been England, america, Germany, Scandanavian nations and France. These people can lay claim to being the most intelligent and a true scientific and technological people. That's why these countries always build the most advanced weapon systems in the world and all other nations have to buy it from them. Apart from China, all other non-white nations don't even have 0.001% of the scientific and technological prowess of the west. I firmly believe that China will break this 400 year old tradition in the next decade or so.

I personally believe that China is ALREADY ahead of Japan and South Korea and on par with Russia. Perhaps slightly ahead in some fields. But this is being down played by the Peoples Republic government so as to not alarm the West and other hostile and potentially hostile nations. GO CHINA GO. China Zindabad.

Where do you get the quantitative data of 0.001% from? Please give me an academic source, my friend.

Apart from China and Japan, all other non-white nations are not even microscopically close to the west in terms of science and technology. If they were they wouldn't need to purchase weapons from the West and Russia. Nor would they need the technical or scientific expertise of the west or Russia. But alas they do (China and Japan not included).

Thanks again bro! Yes as per WIPO report it's already a fact China is way ahead of any other country in patent filings, constitutes 31% of world total in 2014. Same in industrial design filings, constitutes 49% of world total in 2014.

But we are indeed score behind on per capita behind Korea/Japan which tops the world in this regard. Also large applicants are mostly Japanese companies (55 out of top 100, 7 out of top 10), we are behind in this as well. These are hard realities that we have to face, no denial.

Well China only pick up in recent decade or two, let's see historical data. WIPO tracks data as early as 1883, see followings:

Patent filings since 1883

From 1883 to 1963, the USPTO was the leading office in world filings. Application numbers at the JPO and the USPTO were stable until the early 1970s, when the JPO began to see rapid growth, a pattern also observed for the USPTO from the 1980s onwards.

Among the top five offices, the JPO surpassed the USPTO in 1968 and maintained the top position until 2005. Since 2006, the number of applications at the JPO has trended downward. Both the EPO and KIPO have seen increases each year since the early 1980s, as has SIPO since 2001. SIPO surpassed the EPO and KIPO in 2005, the JPO in 2010 and the USPTO in 2011 – and it now receives the largest number of applications worldwide.

There has been a gradual upward trend in the combined share of the top five offices in the world total – from 70% in 2000 to 82% in 2014.

Industrial design filings since 1883

Between 1883 and the early 1950s, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) averaged similar numbers of applications, rarely exceeding 10,000. The JPO received the largest number of applications from the 1950s to the late 1990s, reaching about 50,000 annual filings at its peak.

SIPO began receiving applications in 1985 and saw unprecedented growth, from 640 in 1985 to 660,000 in 2013.

In 2004, KIPO surpassed the JPO and has remained the second-largest office.

In 2012, the USPTO moved ahead of the JPO to become the third largest.

OHIM began receiving applications in 2003 and has remained the fifth largest.

China Surpasses Japan as Asia's Top High-Tech Exporter, ADB Says

    • China accounts for 43.7% of Asia's exports of high-tech goods
    • China also leads in exports of low-tech goods with 55.4% share
China has brought to an end Japan’s dominance of Asia’s high-technology exports, according to the Asian Development Bank.

China’s share of Asia’s exports of high-tech goods such as medical instruments, and aircraft and telecommunications equipment rose to 43.7 percent in 2014 from 9.4 percent in 2000, the ADB said. Japan’s share slid to 7.7 percent last year from 25.5 percent in 2000. Southeast Asian nations including Malaysia and Philippines also lost market share.

The shift marks China’s success in boosting innovation and technology as key drivers of its economy as it seeks to move up the manufacturing value chain. Low-tech goods accounted for 28 percent of China’s exports in 2014, compared with 41 percent in 2000, according to ADB’s Asian Economic Integration Report 2015 released Tuesday.

"China has made inroads in taking more and more hi-tech manufacturing onshore even as a lot of critical components are still imported from other countries," said Frederic Neumann, co-head of Asian economic research at HSBC Holdings Plc in Hong Kong. "It’s becoming highly competitive, with highly skilled labor and we’re seeing increasing research and development moving into China."

China-Made Drones
China-made drones, smart phones, and even high-speed trains have become internationally competitive and the number of enterprises in the high-tech manufacturing sector has tripled to almost 30,000 from less than 10,000 in 2000, Shang-Jin Wei, ADB chief economist, said in an e-mail.

“We are seeing some signs of success in some industries,” he said. “But China is still not a global technology leader like the United States or Germany. What we are seeing is that China is catching up very fast on the ’standard technology’ products and is beginning to do some innovations of its own.”

China also leads in exports of low-tech goods such as textiles, food and beverages, and wood, pulp and paper products. It had a 55.4 percent market share in 2014, followed by India with 9.4 percent.

Cross-border production networks -- trade in parts and components and final assembly -- have strengthened regional interdependence, as seen from increasing intraregional trade shares, the ADB said. Asia’s intraregional gross exports have increased about 3.6 times from 2000 to 2011, it said.

Economic Zones
Special economic zones can be a driving force for increased trade, investment, and economic reform in Asia at a time when the region is experiencing a slowdown in trade, provided the right business environments and policies are put in place, the ADB said. In developing Asia, countries with economic zones attract significantly more foreign direct investment, corresponding to 82 percent greater FDI levels, it said.

Separately, while the impending increase in U.S. interest rates could raise capital flow volatility, it is not expected to rattle the region’s markets as it did in 2013, the report said. Still, managing potentially volatile capital outflows remains an important issue for the region -- especially given rising risk premiums and depreciating currencies, it said.

Thanks!

Instead of looking far into the future, let's look at the present moment or last recorded year. China was already far bigger than any country on this planet in terms of patent filings (31% of world total, 2014), industrial design filings (49% of world total, 2014), industrial GDP ($4.422 trillion, 2014), manufacturing VA ($3.713 trillion, 2014), merchandise exports to rest-of-the-world ($2.343 trillion, 2014), high-tech exports to rest-of-the-world ($560 billion, 2013), trade surpluses with rest-of-the-world ($382 billion in 2014; my estimate for 2015 is $600 billion), gross domestic savings, financial reserves, sovereign welfare fund, and many more indicators. China mainland alone is the second largest creditor nation (the opposite of debtor nation) after Japan, Greater China (+HK +TW) combined number one largest.

However it's not about overtaking anything, but to make China as well as partnering countries more prosperous, especially friends like Pakistan. All the best bro!
