Even in war, one cannot be that ruthless as has been shown in various foreign programmes.

Wars are to win, but soldiers are not masochist butchers or psychopaths.

The US can win in Afghanistan tomorrow if ruthlessness is the byword.

And exactly how many civilians have died in Iraq and Afghanistan as a result of the US invasion?

How many civilians dead in Vietnam and Korea thanks to the US?

How many dead in Libya thanks to NATO?

And with something like 2 million people displaced in Pakistan.

Of course most of this brushed under the carpet because it's all being done in the interests of the west and it's the western media that dominates.

While Pirabhakaran and his gang has been wiped out from the face of the Earth, one wonders if some equality is not brought in, then there is every possibility that the issue can resurface.

People must not forget that for India any resurfacing is as serious as it is to Sri Lanka. The backlash is felt in Tamilnadu and there is the danger that the insurgency can also affect and inflame Tamilnadu and thus, India.

Germany is a powerful and rich country.

Russia is still extremely influential and part of the security council.

The economy is already doing very well, per capita income is increasing, infrastructure development is in full swing and the tourism industry is booming.

One should check the number of kills and the timeframe.

Statistically, in the last few months of the LTTE rebellion, how many were killed is the issue.

Connect the kills with the timeframe.

1000 killed over 10 years and 1000 killed in four days!

The is the quotient to gauge the degree of ruthlessness/ brutality et al!

The collateral damage in one US airstrike is not brushed under the carpet. Instead, the world get horrified because of the report by their very own media!!

The very fact that you can quote the figures of US actions the world over and over time should indicate that it is not brushed under the carpet. Now compare that with the Sri Lankan action. How much is known to the world? Even the UN is not allowed to investigate, forget about the media being allowed in the area of action at those times!

I am not here to pass judgement on the Sri Lankan Govt. They did what they thought was best for them.

I am only stating that one should be more openminded and not merely get smug.

But all the countries you've mentioned will have to get on with China whether they like it or not. The Australian economy runs because of China. The US is in debt to China. Europe is rushing to build economic links with China. Japan has already abdicated its "leadership" role in North East Asia to China. Russia and China get on pretty well so I don't know why you included Russia in the list. Basically, China will be what the US is today in the not too distant future.

And the Chinese are certainly not dumb. They are smart and very hardworking. We can learn from them.

Um why should the time frame matter? Whether, say, 100 000 human beings killed over 20 years or 100 000 human beings killed in one day it is still 100 000 lives that were lost and they are no less important than each other. Is killing slowly better than killing fast? Why? Because there would be less outrage? People go about they busy days and think "oh, only 4 people were killed today, no biggie!" and that makes it acceptable? Sorry, but that's crazy logic to me.

And perhaps you share a different opinion but I think the western media downplays everything nasty the west does. They side with their military, often quite blatantly.

The life of a westerner is worth much more than the life of those in the third world.
