China’s plan to build a massive 120 million-square-foot city — from scratch

Shanghai,Tianjin and Shenzhen are all barely 100 years old, with Shenzhou barely 30.they are all very young citywise, yet they are all bound to be the biggest cities in the world ,see how fast fortune can change.

..In Indian history we had an emperor called Mohammad Bin Tughlaq (1325 to 1351) who history calls 'pagal Tughlaq' (Mad Tughlaq) or Tughlaq the fool.

He was inspired by the Chinese and was the first to introduced token currency in India.

He was a brilliant man but he foolishly thought of building a new capital city and build a city called Daulatabad from scratch. He built it and then forcibly asked the citizens of Delhi to move there. However its not easy to settle in a newly built habitat and within 2 years he had to move back to Delhi along with all his angry citizens. In spite of his brilliance in other areas, history does not treat this ruler well.

Even Akbar (1556-1605), one of the wisest emperors of India decided to build a new capital city from scratch called Fatehpur Sikri. He built it and could only live in it for 10 years and the whole city was abandoned due to lack of water . The abandoned city is today a UNESCO World Heritage site. Chinese members should visit it some day.

...at times when chinese members claim to be ahead of India by 20 years ....when seen through Indian eyes, they sometime appear living in the 16 century. Those who forget history are destined to repeat it.

This is not a troll post ...... I wish the chinese well .....hope history is kind too.

thanks for your stories.but here is not a story of abandon an old capital and build a new one.
our cities are so crowded that we must inlarge them.in fact , your cities are much larger than ours with same population.

.
Though Brasilia was built from scratch ...it was successful because it was built to be the capital of Brazil.

Islamabad was an expansion of the village of Saidpur. Navi Mumbai and New Delhi are extension of the old city. If you wanted to give and Indian example you should have mentioned Chandigarh which was built to replace lahor (old capital of Punjab) and served as joint capital of Punjab and Haryana.

If you observe Brasilia, Islamabad and Chandigarh were successful only because they were designed to be capital cities of their respective states.

There are Towns/cities like Lavasa and Aamby Valley which were built up from scratch but using private money and not government funds. In fact Sahara Group (24 billion $ group) is planning to build 217 new cities from scratch, but by using private funds and not government funds.

I am not talking about expanding old cities ...but building new cities from scratch, where no village/town existed before.

i just hope we grow to such a level off constructing our own planned cities in atleast one or two decades from now..

building from scratch doesn't mean building from no man's land.all China's lands belong to certain adaministrative organization,I'm pretty sure that this planned new city is of no exception, that's a wonderful piece of land, there must be some people already live there.

many top cities in China are very young city wise,Shanghai and Tianjin are barely 100 years old and Shenzhen barely 30.but those top Chinese cities are well on their way to become the biggest cities in the world.you can see how fortune can change during that short span of time.

there is only one new city ---shenzhen---from zero----A miracle in the history of mankind
even the so called ghost cities are new zones of old cities.
the 120 million-square-foot city is just a small part of Changsha, and the lake in the picture is an artificial lake.there is a large industral zone in the north of this new town ,tens of thousans people workers can buy houses in the new town, then they can walk to their companies everyday.(two of my friends buyed houses earlier this year.:azn:) the south of the new town is a famous scenic Area----Yuelusha,and some colleges.the east side of this town is the biggest bus station of Changsha

@beijingwalker

..you are discussing 'Young' cities while the discussion is about 'New' cities.

As explained earlier, rapid urbanization will naturally result in more and more 'young' cities as Villages becomes Towns and Towns become Cities.

....as per Wiki, population of Shenzhen in 1982 was 351,871. When Las Vegas was built, its population was '0'.

I m talking about what this report is about, building sth from scratch. There must many villages even towns in that piece of land already.at least from the author's perspective, building from scratch doesnt mean building from no man's land.
