China-Russia Trade Is on Track to Top USD140 Billion This Year, Official Says

(Yicai Global) Dec. 17 -- The value of bilateral trade between China and Russia could exceed USD140 billion this year, as China’s imports of fuels, minerals and agricultural products grow by leaps and bounds, said a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce.

Already USD130.4 billion worth of goods were traded between China and Russia in the 11 months ended Nov. 30, a year-on-year leap of 33.6 percent, Shue Jueting said. Of this, China’s exports to Russia jumped 31.3 percent to USD59.4 billion and imports expanded 35.5 percent to USD71 billion.

Most of China’s imports from Russia, some 70.9 percent, are fuels and minerals, particularly coal and natural gas. In the first 11 months, China’s imports of fuels leapt 44.2 percent to CNY298.7 billion (USD46.9 billion), while that of metal ores gained 21.7 percent to CNY26.6 billion (USD4.2 billion).

China also started buying more agricultural products, such as rapeseed oil and beef, from Russia this year. From January to November, China’s imports of rapeseed oil and mustard oil soared 59.5 percent to 304,000 tons, that of barley surged 38 times to 75,000 tons, while that of imported beef more than tripled to 17,000 tons.

China mainly exports mechanical and electrical items to Russia.

The substantial growth in bilateral trade between China and Russia since the start of this year reflects the friendly bilateral relations between both parties, said Wei Jinshen, associate professor at the School of Politics and International Relations of Lanzhou University. The proportion of mechanical and electrical products, automobiles and car parts as well as meat and farm produce has hugely risen in the trade structure.

I think China can push more automotive exports to Russia. There is good potential and China brand has a good reputation.

In 1950, Russia helped China with technology when we were down and were being hit by tech embargos. Although China did not need the help, it was most welcome.

In 2020, China is helping Russia with technology when Russia is down and being hit by tech embargos. Although Russia does not need the help, I think it is welcome.

Russia has a lot of pastures. Shouldn't there be more Russian cattle and lamb industries that can replicate the high quality found in Australia and New Zealand? I think they would make huge business in China if they can match the quality.
China and Russia are natural friends. Both countries are secular and pragmatic, never engaging in delusion.
China and Russia form an impenetrable Eurasian fortress. That is why an alliance of these two empires was always a nightmare to the Seagoing empires like the Anglosphere.

Vietnam also exports agricultural products and raw materials to China and imports industrial manufactured products.
Why don't you suggest that the Vietnamese govt cut off trade with China? Maybe you can make your own industrial products.

Think like this: Even if there was no China market, Russia would sell the same items. So, change needs to be come from Russia. Whatever Russia is able to sell, China is the most lucrative market. That's a fact.
I suggest nothing just point to a fact.

And the onus of altering that fact falls squarely on Russia. If China stopped buying Russian petrochemicals, this would not lead to a Huawei to spring up in Moscow. Everybody trades whatever they think they have an advantage of selling.

A great dream that will soon become reality is a massive ASEAN-CIS bloc linked by China where you can ship things from Saigon to Saint Petersburg as easily as across the street. Already Laos is connected. Vietnam will be connected soon too. And if Thailand and Malaysia agree, eventually you can ride from Singapore to Moscow on a single rail line.

Normal trains have been running between Vietnam and Europe, even back in 1960s, when young Vietnamese went from Vietnam to East European countries to study by train.

But with regards to high-speed train, I doubt it. Even if all the railway lines in Laos, Thailand and Malaysia are Chinese-built to standard gauge, it is not easy to go directly from Singapore to China without changing trains, because of different specifications and load.

For example, trains running in the future Thailand high-speed railway (250 km/h), which will be dedicated to passenger, may not suitable to run on the Laos - China railway (160 km/h), which is used to both freight and passenger, and vice versa. As Thailand will not have standard-gauge line for freight, the cargo will still be transported via the metre-gauge line, i.e. moving of cargo between trains have to be made at the Laos-Thai border.

China have both normal trains and high-speed trains running in parallel, so it may not be the problem within China, but big problem in South East Asia..
