Lets consider another flash point North Korea, where both China and Russia are neighbors and has strategic, economic and other interests. In recent UNSC sanction vote (just yesterday) both China and Russia let the resolution passed.
North Korean situation may be different than Myanmar BUT we can not ignore one very prominent fact that US flexing its muscle forced both China and Russia to let the resolution pass rather than further escalation. Bottom line is China understood language of US gun power in this matter.

China is supporting Russia over Crimea by buying Russian oil after Western sanctions and so Russia is helping China over Myanmar.

That is just another arms market for Russia but Russia has no meaningful way to pursue their so called "strategic" wish unless there is base, training or presence.

Well, despite all the problems, we are generous enough to offer our help and never underestimate the virility of the people of Pakistan who have helped their brothers in distress from Rohingya (there are about half a million of them in Karachi) in the east to the Bosnians in the west. Believe me that's the best bet you got when rest of the world is standing indifferent.

The Chinese and Russian Govt could have pressured the Myanmar Junta to put an end to this brutality, if even through the back channel. But instead of that, they are openly supporting the oppressors. Myanmar isn't so strong to resist pressure from its strategic allies and long term partners either. Goes both ways.

It's been clear from the start. People here expect too much from the Chinese. But they don't even care when ethnic Chinese are murdered in Burma but some still hope that they'll sacrifice their interests for Rohingyas.

I didn't say you should praise them. I was just surprised to see many of you expected things to be otherwise.

Moreover, why will China or Russia pressure Myanmar over some rohingyas? The Rohingyas are of no concern to them , neither are they important to these countries . So why should China and Russia care or risk their interests with Myanmar government over them? It makes no sense whatsoever.
China and Russia will do what is best for their interests (i.e stand by the Myanmar government) irrespective of what some might think. I see nothing wrong in that. (Geo politically speaking).That's the whole point.

I think Bangladesh can persuade Russia to take a neutral position in UN if vigorous diplomatic initiative is undertaken.Russia is a far away country.It has only business interest in myanmar unlike China which is a direct neighbor and have geo-political and economic interest.Russia also have large business interest in Bangladesh.They are building 12 billion dollar nuclear power plant in Bangladesh as well as supplying billions of dollar worth arms.Russian hydrocarbon giant Gazprom is also present in BD.Russia's geo-political interest mainly lies in Baltic, Black sea, Arctic and northen Pacific.Not in Bay of Bengal or Indian ocean unlike China.But for China, making them neutral is an uphill battle task for Bangladesh nearing impossible in current scenario.

BD's best bet is UK/Germany and somewhat USA.
UNSC is not that important as long as we can persuade EU and USA to bring back sanction. We also need to pursue west to not to let Burmese army to use Su-Ki as their cover up.
UNSC never imposed any sanction and resolution yet west were able to put that country back to dark ages until Su-Ki came to power.

And to all naysayers, sanction does work. Look how military at least agreed to share power. Without sanction this would not had possible.

The next set of action is Internatioal Crime Tribunal which does not require UNSC but UN general assembly will suffice. I hope that is the direction BD should go instead of beating the bush.

Yes, one good thing the govt. is doing is allowing unrestricted access of foreign media to the refugee camp and border areas.It will help in global public opinion.It will help us in the Hague if we go.Another good thing is, govt itself started to lash out at myanmar for it's atrocity which it never did before.It will give signal to the world community about the seriousness of our problem. It seems, Bangladesh is trying to take a holistic approach to this problem this time unlike piecemeal effort of the past.

মিয়ানমারের রাখাইন রাজ্যে সংখ্যালঘু মুসলিম নির্যাতনের ঘটনা নিয়ে সারা বিশ্ব থেকে নিন্দার ঝড় ওঠেছে। পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন দেশের গণমাধ্যমে রোহিঙ্গা নিপীড়নের চিত্র তুলে ধরা হচ্ছে। খবর ও ফটো প্রকাশের পাশাপাশি কার্টুন এঁকেও রোহিঙ্গা ইস্যুতে বিশ্বনেতাদের নিরবতাকে ব্যাঙ্গাত্মকভাবে ফুটিয়ে তোলা হচ্ছে।

তেমনই একটি কার্টুন ছাপা হয় ঢাকার ইংরেজি অনলাইন সংবাদমাধ্যম ঢাকা ট্রিবিউনে। কার্টুনিস্ট তন্ময়ের আঁকা কার্টুনটির শিরোনামে লেখা হয়েছে 'Swept under the rug.' সাধারণত, কোনো কলঙ্কজনক ঘটনাকে ধামাচাপা দেয়ার অর্থে ইংরেজিতে এই প্রবাদ বাক্যটি ব্যবহার করা হয়। কার্টুন চিত্রে দেখা যাচ্ছে, মিয়ানমারের শক্তিশালী সেনাবাহিনীর উচ্চপদস্থ একজন কর্মকর্তা ব্রাশ হাতে মিয়ানমার থেকে আবর্জনার মত করে মানুষ সরাচ্ছেন। মূলত এই মানুষগুলো হলো দেশটির রাখাইন রাজ্যের সংখ্যালঘু রোহিঙ্গা সম্প্রদায়।

কার্টুনটিতে দেখা যায়, ওই বর্মিজ সেনা বাংলাদেশের ভূখণ্ডকে একটি কম্বলের মত করে উঁচু করে ধরে আছেন, যার নিচে জড়োসড়ো হয়ে আরো কিছু অসহায় রোহিঙ্গা অবস্থান করছে। বাংলাদেশের মানচিত্রের নিচে আশ্রয় নেয়া মানুষের কাছে রাখাইন রাজ্যে অবশিষ্ট থাকা বাকি রোহিঙ্গাদেরকেও ঢুকিয়ে দিতে তৎপর সেনাবাহিনী। এজন্য তারা সেখানে রক্তপাত ঘটাচ্ছে। ফলে প্রাণ ভয়ে বাংলাদেশে পালিয়ে আসছে রোহিঙ্গারা।

সেনাবাহিনীর ব্রাশরূপী অস্ত্রে পিষ্ঠ হয়ে রক্তে লাল হয়ে গেছে বর্মিজ সেনার হাত। একই সাথে রক্তাক্ত হয়েছে রাখাইন রাজ্যের মাটি। রোহিঙ্গাদেরকে সেনাবাহিনী শুধু দেশ ছাড়াই করেনি, তাদের নিথর দেহ এবং দেহ থেকে গড়িয়ে পড়া রক্তও যেন তারা বাংলাদেশে ঢুকিয়ে দিতে চাচ্ছেন।

কার্টুনটিতে যে সেনাকর্মকর্তা রোহিঙ্গা নিপীড়ন চালাচ্ছে তিনি তার নেতৃত্বাধীন সেনাদের উদ্দেশ্যে বলছে, ‘Let's Push some more, Quick!' অর্থাৎ দ্রুত আরো কিছু রোহিঙ্গাদের বাংলাদেশে পাঠিয়ে দেও। কার্টুনচিত্রের ডান দিকের উপরের কর্ণারে থাকা ‘বিশ্ববাবু’ যেন কিছুই দেখছে না। চোখে চশমা দিয়ে সে অন্য দিকে মুখ ফিরিয়ে পায়চারি করছে!

মিয়ানমারের অভ্যান্তরীণ এই সমস্যার ভুক্তভোগী হচ্ছে বাংলাদেশ। রাখাইন রাজ্যে রোহিঙ্গাদের মানবাধিকার কেড়ে নেয়া হলেও বিশ্ব আজ কার্যকরী কোন উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করছে না। মিয়ানমার সেনাবাহিনী রোহিঙ্গাদেরকে অব্যহতভাবে বাংলাদেশে পুশ করছে আর বিশ্ব এ সংকটকে পাশ কাটিয়ে চলে যাচ্ছে। ফলে রাখাইনে মৃতমানুষের রক্ত যেন আরো বেশি করে জমাট বাঁধছে। সে রক্ত আর লাশও ঠেলে দেয়া হচ্ছে বাংলাদেশের দিকে!Last Updated: 13 September 2017
