They mostly killed those who stand against them, there were still a lot of Ming loyalists who were given preferential treatment and able to secure their official positions. Some of them even joined the Eight Banners, such as this dude 朱煜勳. (朱 is the family name of the Ming loyalists)

Before China was united for the 1st time, the different component areas had already fully developed; all those states culturally converged and they had been playing the King of Hill game for many centuries. The final unification was a big relief and unification was desired; so unification last through dynasty changes.

This is more like the Europe without the petty nuisance of nationalism, probably due to 1. very small biological/racial difference in the East Asia, 2. non-existence of an exclusive, intolerant, religious monotheism. Proactive(Confucian) and pragmatic (legalist) political ideologies cry out for a strong central-powered state.

Chinese think the Roman system lacks the cultural power to assimilate, and their elitism put a barrier btw the state and the grass root. So the populations remain psychologically separate.

The US used to have successful cultural assimilation before they indulge into the nowadays liberalism. Assimilation takes (long) time but US recently have let in too much alien population for their WASP mainstream to swallow. Within this generation we will witness the demographic shift in the US. Whether the US will last as a political entity is becoming a bit more uncertain.

The SU have assimilated in the hard way, but nonetheless successful if their soviet economical system had behaved. The soviets did have political confidence but I doubt they were culturally confident.
