China nears approval of $16 billion domestic jet-engine plan: Xinhua

I suppose all the aircraft pictured below are being powered by Russian engines?

Apparently going by the article not just Russian.

China is determined to reduce its dependency on foreign companies like Boeing Co (BA), EADS-owned Airbus (EAD.PA), General Electric Co (GE) and Rolls Royce Plc (RR.TO) for the country's soaring demand for planes and engines.
So far the domestic aerospace industry has failed to build a reliable, high-performance jet engine to end its dependence on Russian and Western makers for equipping its military and commercial aircraft.

Great news for emerging economies.......and a cause for serious headache in west.....

If China can develop this engine successfully......western engine manufacturing plant will definitely lose huge market share in not only China but all over the world........leading to shops being shut and most importantly unemployment in Europe and US......and more job creation in China.....

More tough days ahead for the Europeans and Americans.

@Donatello Post the entire news. :D

Don't be lazy. It's just one click away. :P

The problem with Yahoo articles is that they are hard to format and put it here. So i was like i might as well just give the entire link.:woot:

On the thread,

16billion dollars is a lot of investment. It's good to see that the Chinese defence industry is tackling this issue on urgent basis. After all they have hundreds of new planes to induct but with no local engines. Also, let's not forget the civilian and military transport, plus the gas-turbines for naval use.

It's not just that. The trade unions in US killed their own industry, as in the case of GM. In case of Europe, the socialist governments dictating what the corporations do and which ones to merge, led to the collapse of business freedom. The west still holds the edge in terms of the technology they can roll out. Designing jet engines isn't exactly the minimum wage labor task...........so even if China tries to build engines, they have to hire and pay the engineers and designers.

China mostly grew because of cheap labor availability and so did India in terms of IT. But Jet engine design is a different ball park. Hence the 16 Billion $ investment.

Yes, once China catches up with the West in all areas of technology then they will lose their privileged position in the world.

No! check with post #19!

The money is for development of the engines for our civilian planes and more advanced jet fighters in the pipeline!

Aerospace is one of last remaining sector that the West still holding their advantage over China, now China is able to do wide body plane such Y-20 and regional commercial aircrafts, If China come with any breakthrought on Engines technologie, not only China will break Western dependance but also break their monopoly on providing commercial, cargo and fighter throughout the world.

I think China is serious about this business if it's willing to dump $16 billions for engine research ;)

China should be able to make all types of engines by 2020.

It has a long-term plan to match the US by 2030 in engine technology.

it surely looks Promising :china: :china:

this is really big money i afraid there is some exaggeration!!! because it wont really needs all those money to develop an engine whatsoever especially they already have spent money on it and they have the plants that making them.

16 billions is just the begining, we should invest more in the future. The area of comcern is how to efficiently build crystal balde in quantity and quality control of the engine produced.

Not just a single type of engine, but a series of engines from military to civilian. :coffee:
