Beijing: China may test a 400-km range air-to-air missile which could take out early warning and aerial refuelling aircraft. If successfully tested, the weapon`s range will be longer than those of the US and Russia.


The picture of the J-11B twin-engine fighter jet carrying a large missile surfaced at the People`s Liberation Army website, state-run China Daily newspaper reported on Thursday.

A spokesman for the Chinese Air Force on Wednesday said no official introduction of the potential new weapon has been disclosed by the air force or defence contractors.

The US` longest-range air-to-air missile is the AIM-120D with a range of up to 200 km while Russia has the R-37 and K-100 air-to-air missiles, said to have operational ranges of up to 400 km.

The missile`s appearance has attracted attention from military enthusiasts, many of whom said such a missile would boost the air force`s combat capabilities.

According to the picture, the twin-engine jet stretches about one-fourth of the length of the 22-metre-long aircraft -- during Red Sword 2016, an aerial warfare exercise, over a northwestern desert in November.

It comes after photographs circulated on weapons websites late last year of a Chinese J-16 strike fighter carrying a nearly identical missile.

Chinese fighter jets currently use the PL-11 and PL-12 missiles to attack long-distance targets, but their maximum ranges are shorter than 100 km.

According to Fu Qianshao, an equipment researcher with the PLA Air Force, China has developed a new missile that can hit high-value targets such as early-warning planes and aerial refuelling aircraft, which stay far from conflict zones.

Most air-to-air missiles in service around the world have a maximum range of around 100 km, while a handful of new types propelled by ramjets can reach 200 km, Fu said.

However, all of them are unsuitable for combating early-warning planes because of their short ranges, he said.

According to Fu, long-range ground-to-air missiles are restricted by their fixed deployment when dealing with planes far away.

"The best solution to this problem is to send a super-maneuverable fighter jet with very-long-range missiles to destroy those high-value targets, which are `eyes` of enemy jets," Fu said.

"So the successful development of this potential new missile would be a major breakthrough in the air force`s weapons upgrade."

The range of the missile is expected to be more than 400 km. It could be farther than any air-to-air missile used by western air forces, he said.

Fu added that based on his experience, an ultralong-range missile would enter the stratosphere -- at an altitude of 20 to 50 km -- and continue its flight there until it detects its target and dives to strike.

Its size would enable it to be equipped with a large, cutting-edge guidance radar to detect targets. All of these capabilities would allow it to deal with large planes and stealth jets, Fu added.

Wang Ya`nan, an expert from Aerospace Knowledge magazine, said the superlong range of such a missile would mean it could use satellites to relay data and control signals.

China has already tested anti-satellite missiles.

China is reportedly testing a beyond-visual-range, air-to-air missile in combat drills capable to engage targets up to 400 kilometers away, China Daily wrote.

According to the newspaper, a photo posted on the People's Liberation Army website, shows a J-11B fighter jet armed with an unknown rocket almost one-fourth of the length of the 22-meter-long plane.

The paper added that the photograph was made during an aerial-warfare drill held in northwestern China in November 2016.

Images of a J-16 strike fighter carrying a nearly identical rocket earlier appeared online.

The newspaper quoted military expert Fu Qianshao as saying on Thursday that China was apparently developing a new missile capable of destroying high-value targets, such as early warning aircraft and flying tankers, which normally stay far from combat zones.

Fu also said that while most of the existing air-to-air missiles had a range of about 100 kilometers, the new missile would be able to destroy targets up to 400 kilometers away.

"Successful development of this potentially new missile would be a major breakthrough in the [Chinese] Air Force's weapons upgrade," the expert said.

He added that the ultra-long-range missile would be able to enter the stratosphere at an altitude of up to 50 kilometers and fly there until it spotted its target and then swoop down to destroy it.

Photographs posted on IHS Jane's and on Chinese media show China's J-11B and J-16 fighters carrying an as-of-yet unnamed missile that Air force researcher Fu Qianshao told Chinese state-run media has a range of almost 250 miles — much further than current Chinese or even US capabilities.

"The successful development of this potential new missile would be a major breakthrough," Reuters reports Fu as telling a Chinese state-run newspaper.

According to Fu, the missile would enable the People's Liberation Army Air Force to "send a super-maneuverable fighter jet with very long-range missiles to destroy those high-value targets, which are the 'eyes' of enemy jets."

This week a meeting was held in the state of Colorado in the United States for space experts to come together and talk about the future of space exploration. Some military officials spoke about the possibilities of moving warfare into space.

Radio Sputnik discussed this matter with professor David Stupples, a cyber and electronic warfare expert at City University, London.

“I think what you need to go back to, is the speech by President Putin in 2007, to say that information warfare is going to be a key part of future battles. If we understand the concept of that, we can turn and look at where the information warfare is going,” Stupples said.

He further said that what is going on in the cyberspace today was previously unheard of; such as the hacking of large corporations and attacks against organizations by penetrating into their data systems.

What is essential to understand in this scenario is that a lot of this information is managed in space.

“We have space satellites that are doing the communications; there are also satellites in space for GPS. Then there are some for the intelligence services, for weather and it goes on and on,” the expert said.

According to him, “the US has already taken out a satellite in space via attacking it with a missile from a fighter aircraft. It was a scientific satellite but it was being used for an experiment.”

He claimed that Russia and China has also done the same.

However, most of those satellites are in low orbit and the expert doesn’t think that the ones in the elliptical orbit can be taken out just yet.

Stupples further said that currently there is a great deal of experimentation going on with high energy weapons, i.e., laser weapons. However, according to him lasers won’t be able to take out satellites that are present in the outer orbit.

Looking at the repercussions such space wars can have in the future, Stupples said, “Let’s just look at the global positioning satellites and if you just start to take out those, then the navigation systems of every single airline will be impacted because the airline’s navigation is updated via the GPS satellites.”

He further said that ships also operate on the same GPS satellites and to go back to standard navigation using compasses and charts would be a retrograde step costing a lot to the world.

Most importantly, the expert noted that some of these satellites currently in space are nuclear powered and if they are destroyed they will rain down nuclear material on the planet below.
