Beijing: China and India may come closer if BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi comes to power but his victory could upset the US and western powers, an article in an influential state-run Chinese daily said today.

A write up in the state-run Global Times, an official publication of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), said “Modi was once a practical businessman. After he got into politics, he established good relations with China.”

“A large number of Chinese enterprises invested in Gujarat, contributing to the economic development of the state. Therefore, ties between China and India may become closer under Modi’s leadership,” the article said.

The article written by Liu Zongyi, a strategic analyst from the state-run Shanghai Institute for International Studies, said Modi’s victory may not be palatable to western countries like the US which has imposed sanctions against the Gujarat Chief Minister for his alleged role in the 2002 riots.

Without directly referring to Modi’s remarks against China on the border issue while campaigning in Arunachal Pradesh where he had said China should shed its “expansionist policy”, the article said a section of the Western media and observers are “hyping up” his remarks to foment discord between China and India.

It says that some western media and observers are "trying to foment discord between China and India by hyping up nationalist Modi's aggressive statements on the border issue between the two countries. They underscored the possibility that India will ally with Japan and Vietnam to contain China after Modi becomes the PM".

"In fact, it has been a policy for India to offset the negative effects of China's rise by enhancing strategic cooperation with countries around China. It's unlikely that Modi will change this policy. - BRICS joint investment in Southeast, Africa and Latin America.
- Oil & gas trading from Russia and resource trading from all BRICS countries to be done in mutual currencies only instead of Dollars.

And if all this goes well, we could even consider military exchanges. It is a far cry but no harm in encouraging.

We and Russians have high level of military exchanges; the Chinese and our troops have also undertaken joint training.

This leaves out Brazil and South Africa. I think RIC should encourage military exchanges in anti-drug warfare, counter terrorism and jungle counter-insurgency from each of these countries.

I wish more Indians stopped being woolly headed on relations with China. The Chinese are nobody's fools. The Chinese want good relations but on their terms and anyone assuming that the Chinese will behave differently just because we have a new leader is being naive in the extreme. The Chinese will only change when they are faced not just with new determination but only when it is backed with enough resources to give it teeth. India is quite some way from that place, in the interim, it is best to check in any woolly headedness at the counter.

These BRICS leaders will be perfect for countering Western influence in the developing world.

If BRICS only trade with each other using our own currencies, that could significantly dent the hegemony (and thus buying power) of the dollar, increasing the buying power of our own currencies.

Russia seems the most interested in this, they are already trying to stop using dollars, which is a big deal considering Russia has the largest gas reserves on Earth, and they are also currently the number one oil producer in the world.

Russia and Brazil are two of the most resource-rich countries on Earth, and China and India have the largest number of consumers in the world, whereas South Africa speaks for much of the African continent. This could be a big deal, especially in the coming decades.

There are issues, lots of issues between India & China, border conflict, claim on our land, military help to Pakistan, and Trade Imbalance, to name a few. While improvement in relations is good, we have to be extra-cautious also, especially with China, they are very difficult to understand, hence very difficult to trust.

We have more important things to do, we need to bring our economy back on track, we need to provide for the basic necessities like education, health, etc. to all, we need to improve our infrastructure, we need to focus on manufacturing industries, we need to reduce our trade deficits, we also need to strengthen our defences and improve our indigenous defence capabilities, meanwhile, we should also look forward to improve relations with China, but we should not be over-enthusiastic about it. And we don't want uncomfortable relationship with anybody, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't be firm whenever required.
