China has deployed surface-to-air missiles on a disputed island in the South China Sea, Taiwan says.

Satellite images taken on 14 February appear to show two batteries of eight missile launchers and a radar system on Woody or Yongxing Island in the Paracels.

The presence of missiles would significantly increase tensions in the acrimonious South China Sea dispute.

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said reports were a Western media invention.

But Mr Wang defended "the limited and necessary self-defence facilities" on islands inhabited by Chinese personnel as "consistent with the right for self-preservation and self-protection.... under the international law".

According to reports China has deployed HQ-9. It's getting interesting, if US can deploy its missile interceptors in S Korea to protect its interests then China has every right to protect its interests in SCS as well.

Well, there goes any pretence of these being civilian projects. Putting missiles there doesn't make China's claims any more legitimate.

It's not like the United States or her allies believed in that pretense in the first place. One simply doesn't fly B-52 bombers over what it is convinced is a "civilian project".

Hahaha.

But seriously, would you want to risk a passenger-laden civilian airplane?

Australia’s air force chief said that China now challenges “nearly all” Australian surveillance flights over the South China Sea. Air Marshal Leo Davies told Sydney Morning Heraldthat the number of Chinese warnings to routine Australian patrols had increased, a byproduct of an increasing Chinese presence on disputed islands in the area.

“[W]herever we go on our normal Gateway patrol, we now find that there is an increasing number of locations where the challenge would occur,” Davies continued. He was referring to the “Operation Gateway” maritime patrols Australia routinely conducts in the North Indian Ocean and South China Sea. Davies acknowledged that Operation Gateway had recently seen a “slight increase” in patrols of the South China Sea relative to the Indian Ocean.
‘Nearly All’ Australian Patrols in South China Sea Are Challenged by China | The Diplomat
Operation Gateway is Australia's enduring contribution to the preservation of regional security and stability in South East Asia. For Operation Gateway, the Australian Defence Force provides maritime surveillance patrols in the North Indian Ocean and South China Sea. Operation Gateway helps maintain the bilateral Defence relationship between Australia and Malaysia. Operation Gateway is part of the support to Australia's efforts to counter people smuggling in the region.ADF assets are dedicated to Operation Gateway taskings periodically. The number of personnel involved vary on each occurrence.

But THAAD hasn't been deployed yet. Even when North Korea has been testing nukes and ballistic missiles. So deploying missiles on the islands give the U.S. the reason to deploy missiles to South Korea something China doesn't want in the first place.

US has signaled to deploy them in S Korea and China did show grave concerns. What we are seeing here appears to be a swift response from China.........Whether China deployed these SAM's here or not US was going to.With this move, China just raised the stakes for US.

Indeed, this gave the U.S. a reason to deploy in response.

Swift? 4 month is swift?

China is spooked about this super-advanced missile system that the US wants in South Korea

If China doesn't want THAAD in RoK, let it use its influence to reign in DPRK.

U.S. Military Aircraft Flew Close to China-Built Artificial Islands in South China Sea - WSJ
This is China's response to US provocations and wont stop there, S-400 is on it's way.
The 400-kilometer-range system will, for the first time, allow China to strike any aerial target on the island of Taiwan, in addition to reaching air targets as far as New Delhi, Calcutta, Hanoi, and Seoul. The Yellow Sea and China’s new air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea will also be protected. The system will permit China, if need be, to strike any air target within North Korea.

The building of the artificial structures themselves is a PRC provocation.

Building them does not magically turn international waters into Chinese territorial waters. Likewise international airspace and aircraft identification zone.

Indeed, just build some islands where U.S. warships and planes have patrolled for many years and then claimed it has provoked a response.
