China hails woman who rescued bleeding toddler left for dead

I can assure you that the bystander effect doesn't apply to that incident. Look at the examples mentioned in the bystander effect and compare it with the Chinese incident. In every case of the other examples there are uncertainties and they are extremely vague. You guys have to admit that the economic development in China has blinded people to many things. Herein people with needs. A mentality like "you either catch the train or you die/suffer".

That clip has truly destroyed my aspirations about learning Chinese because i wanted to contribute to the Chinese. 18 people watching a girl bleed to death, how utterly disgusting!

Remember buddy, even before this, the stereotype was that Chinese people are "soulless robots'.

Nevermind the fact that it is so common across the world that it has a syndrome named after it, nevermind the fact that this is the first widely publicized case in a nation of 1.3 billion people... Or that it has attracted such condemnation from across the spectrum of Chinese society.

It is easier for many to simply stick with their stereotypes. Let them continue to underestimate us.

The problem you have and correct me if I'm wrong, is that this not the world vs. you Chinese -you are pleading to. But Chinese population itself who are being critical of where the culture is headed.

The disregard for ethics, the support for genocidal maniacs is embedded in this “you can do whatever unethical, the Chinese don't interfere”. Infact all you chinese proudly remind us, the rest of the world, about " Chinese dont interfere and say anything even if you are the worst of human mankind". Your list of ' allies' reflect that non chalant outlook.

That cultural trait is alive and kicking in the Chinese psyche of ' let others lead first’ i.e. the bad in this world is not your problem or speak up against ' first ' or 'ever'.

stop putting it on a "bystander effect"- the ethical short fallings are not limited to this child, it is reflective on the world stage too...

I am glad that this incident is giving a reason for Chinese people to do some introspection.

And it puts pressure on the Government to implement some proper Good Samaritan laws as well.

again we hope it's not a lip service where its only " good samaritan law" - but a change in national, cultural pysche . China is going to be a global power- but it has a choice to be feared like USSR or have a moral standing like world sees the US/ Europe and other free worlds.

Are you completely uneducated? What is the genocide of the Kurds? There is not a single bullet fired against a civillian Kurd in Turkey. I think you should read some more about the Kurdish issue before you come with ridicicoulous statements. And how dare you to compare this with some conflicts that happened between some guerillas and state? Guerilla wars are visible everywhere. People demand land even in China and some fight for it. That is completely another issue.

Here we are looking at a daily life in a peaceful city. You need to understand how to conduct an arguement. In WW1 many atrocities happened, in time of war things go out of control and the system is broken in other words chaos appears (rape/murder/other atorcities), people act based on their sentiments and feelings. But this didn't happen in time of war or anything.

You are asking me where is the humanity of those 18 people. Personally, I am disgusted with those 18 people.

This is an internal issue, introspection means we ourselves are looking inwards. Not you.

However, since you are making a judgement against China based on 18 people, then I will ask in return: where is the humanity of the Turkish people who didn't stop the Armenian genocide? The entire Turkish nation was a "bystander" to that genocide, far more than 18 people.

.
STOP STOP derailing the issue. Its not about turkey- on one hand you say this gives the chinese an opportunity to look inward and then you point fingers elsewhere. Is this what your upbringing was? Did your parents tell you if asked about correcting your faults , always try to blame the neighbours kid's and say " But but so and so does bad things"

Yes, for Chinese people to look inwards. Introspection means that we ourselves are looking inwards.

An outsider cannot do introspection on our behalf. And that is exactly what this thread is about.

.
Just call it quits people, who are we tring to convince here on an online forum.

If people don't agree or believe in each other, it is fine too.

The thread is about not an occasional failing -it about a national spirit and lack of ethics per the chinese themsleves. You are a poster child of why any so called introspection will be lip service. you can't look beyond you need to point fingers elsewhere.

A Good Samaritan Law will not help. Such a law only operate if the fact the rescuer is a good Samaritan (i.e. he/she didn't cause the accident in the first place) is not under dispute.

Agreed. If one read the Chinese internet, there are tons of reports of Foshan people being singled out in Guangdong and asked why Foshan people are so cold-blooded. Or Cantonese getting questioned in other provinces for being cold-blooded. It should come as no surprise in an international forum like this Chinese will be questioned by people from other countries for the same reason. People just have this tendency of blaming others and thinking they're somehow different, until similar thing happen on their doorsteps.

.
Just because just your government ensures that none of the negative news are ever reported, it does not mean that it does not happen. In fact this news unfortunately for China somehow got leaked out & the world is debating on it. There are scores of negative things that are hushed up & never ever get reported.

What a stupid reply. Check any Chinese news website, majority news is negative or neutral. If you do not know, just shut up.

There are many negative news never get reported, I think it is true, and so is it in India. Look at your own country first. When 6000 children dies everyday, there are at least 6000 sad stories everyday. How many of them get reported?

It will help if they can prosecute you for not helping. Here in Canada, Quebec has a law that says if you don't help when you are able, you get can a max. of 3 years in prison.

. .
I think this is the worst example of By-Stander effect. This can happen in any country, esp. in the mega-cities, where people are just walking zombies.
