China gains edge in Sri Lanka

China is making new friends in South Asia, since her shipping lanes to the Middle East pass through those waters. Making new friends such as Maldives and Sri Lanka helps to keep those trade lanes secure. The risk of war between China and India at the moment, despite all the tough talk on the internet by keyboard warriors, is nearly zero. Trade volume is at all time high and relationship is at its best point since 1962.

While it's true that China is looking for new allies, it doesn't mean Sri Lanka can't keep its relationship with India. It's not a matter of one or the other. Due to geographical proximity and the Tamil factor, Sri Lanka will always have a close relationship with India. I don't know why some people view it as India being abandoned? Do you immediately lose your old friends when you meet someone new? No. It just means you have a bigger group of friends to interact with, and in this case, to trade with.
