But why a watered down version of a ship costs more than the orignal piece

This is because the Chinese arms industry is mainly state owned. This means that PLA will get their gear at pretty much manufacturing price (plus a bit). Export, on the other hand, require you to make a profit on it.

the guy i know said the longest shoot he fired was against a small target (over the horizon) and the range was around 24KM, quite impressive indeed!

even though he said on HQ-16A's manual, it has 40KM effective range against various targets

HQ-16G is on the way, but I do not think its range will extend too long (most speculated it will be over 70KM), as a missile dedicated to deal with over the horizon cruise missiles with a range over 75KM is an unnecessary overkill

because we have HHQ-9 with effective range over 120KM and HHQ-9B over 200KM are more than enough to host first layer air defense shield for our AC battle groups, but it has its own limitations too, so HQ-16 is a vital supplementary to our air defense layers
