The Chinese government plans to provide Cambodia with two new special naval ships to enhance bilateral cooperation and serve the interests of the nation and its people, in accordance with the purposes and principles of the Cambodian Constitution.

Lieutenant General Mali Socheata, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of National Defence, said yesterday that the “Type 056 corvette” vessels are expected to be ready and delivered to Cambodia by 2025 or later.

She added that the donation was requested by Cambodia, and aims to strengthen the navy’s capacity to protect and maintain peace, stability, and security, as well as to support search and rescue operations and other humanitarian activities at sea.

“Cambodia has also received substantial support from other development partners, such as training and equipment provision, and we always welcome those who sincerely wish to assist us,” Lt Gen Socheata said.

She added that Cambodia is a sovereign state with the full right to build and promote cooperation with all partners for the benefit of the nation and its people. All cooperation is in line with the objectives and principles of Cambodia’s Constitution, particularly respecting and protecting sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence.

Regarding the construction of the Ream base, Lt Gen Socheata said that the government has completed the first phase and will proceed with the second phase, which is expected to be finished in the near future.

Yang Peou, secretary-general of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, said yesterday that requesting a ship from the Chinese government was appropriate, given the previous joint exercises and the use of Chinese technology by Cambodia. This helps Cambodia better understand Chinese technology.

“Since the countries have a good relationship, Cambodia can request purchases. For example, although Cambodia has placed orders with the United States, the US does not sell to Cambodia due to a lack of strong military relations,” Peou said.

He emphasised that, despite its peaceful status, Cambodia needs to develop its defence capabilities, especially given its maritime and land borders. Modern military technology must be advanced geographically, particularly as neighbouring countries are highly developed.

Peou added that to defend sovereignty over both sea and land, Cambodia must develop its military technology and national defence capabilities. Stronger defence capabilities contribute to maintaining peace.
