But..but..but all the research papers published by China MUST show you are #1...as volume equates to innovation...right?
Nah it has various other factors in place as well see the other thread China has improved by many ranks in 5 years it's very commendable

For a developing country, it's normal for one side to be developed and the other side to be developing.

But since China is a huge country, the size of the developed part can be as big as Japan or perhaps USA.

Well, China is only "developing" because it has 1.4 billion people. Reality is about half of that already live in a "developed" country's condition and that's why it is producing so much innovation now.

It depends upon what you define as "developed". While China surely has gone on a building binge in the last 20+ years the US has been doing it since the mid 1800's. So even most houses 140 years old have electrical outlets on all the walls, heating systems, and pretty much everything else you'd expect.

Sure there are homes in inner cities that have been neglected...but even they once had relatively modern conveniences.

I guess you didn't know WIPO, or international patent office, which published this report is based in Europe has very high standard for patent and paper applications. Volume itself don't cut it anymore, China's paper and patent quality have improved dramatically over the past 10 years and in many areas have surpassed the US. Go to WIPO and look deeper on what metrics they ranked each country.

what a load of bs.

what a load of bs.

LOL!
Ever check out the median homes outside of your cities compared to the median homes outside of ours?

You want to try and compare your very tiny remote villages 100 miles from your cities to ours so you can understand what I mean? Remember we hit close to 100% electrification 70 years ago...you did it only a few years ago. Let's look at an example from a town in the least populated state in the US far away from any city. Saratoga Wyoming.

Saratoga, Wyoming in the middle of frickin nowhere (population only 1,591 people)

House for sale in that tiny town

The question is what is his definition of "developed".

Is it paving all your roads? Getting electricity to everybody? I'm sure there are plenty of slums in the world that have that too. You want to call places like that "developed"? How do you define it?

The only demographically comparable nation is India.

Still, China can and will do better. China is a developing nation. It still has lots of barely educated population and of course less wealthy per capita compared to all the top 20 nations on this list.

In fact China's the only one in the top 20 that has a GDP per capita less than $20,000 USD even if we adjust for devalued RMB and purchasing power, it is half as rich per capita as all those other nations, an interesting outlier.

Anyway rankings are adjusted somehow. Cyprus ranked one higher than Italy. Population size certainly one factor incorporated in ranking adjustment.

If rankings are nominal, US and China would be top just like in NATURE and many other well regarded general STEM industrial and academic rankings.
