The Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Ma Mingqiang has suggested that the Rohingya Muslim insurgents are to blame for the crisis now brewing in the Rakhine State.

China is known as a longtime ally of Myanmar.

He spoke about China's stance on the issue when he took questions from the press after attending a programme at the Economic Relations Division at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Sunday.

An ongoing army operation on the insurgents in Myanmar's Rakhine State has forced 300,000 Rohingyas to flee to Bangladesh, where another 400,000 refugees have taken shelter over the past few decades of turmoil.

Ambassador Mingqiang noted that the recent violence in Rakhine started through attacks by the insurgents on police posts and an army base on Aug 25, pushing the Rohingya people across the border.

But he acknowledged that Bangladesh was suffering due to the situation developing across the border.

He said China was also suffering from the Rohingya crisis because it had investments in Myanmar and wanted to revive BCIM (Bangladesh, China, India, Myanmar) economic corridor plan.

The ambassador hoped the Rohingya crisis will end soon.

Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi is under pressure from the international community over the Rohingya issue. Many have even called for stripping her of Nobel Peace Prize for not taking measures to stop persecution and killings of Rohingyas.

Myanmar on Wednesday announced that it is negotiating with China and Russia to ensure they block any UN Security Council censure over the violence that has forced those people to flee.

In a rare letter to the UN Security Council last Tuesday, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern that the violence could spiral into a 'humanitarian catastrophe'.

After being briefed by Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque on the Rohingya issue on Saturday, Russian Ambassador Alexander Ignatov said he believed that the situation would come up in the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York.

But The Sunday Times newspaper reported last week that Suu Kyi’s security adviser said 'friendly countries' would prevent any criticism of Burma.

Earlier, China, backed by Russia, blocked a short UN Security Council statement on Myanmar in March this year, after the 15-member body met to discuss the situation in Rakhine State.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, after briefing Dhaka-based diplomats on Sunday, said Myanmar never responded to Bangladesh's proposals for a bilateral solution to the longstanding crisis.

Foreign Secretary Haque briefed Minqiang on the issue earlier this month.

How do Bangladeshis feel about this statement?

How do Bangladeshis feel about this statement?

I don't really know how other Bangladeshis feel, but for me, its more than expected. The CCP is known for only looking after its own interests. The decision by the GoI was on the other hand very different from what the predecessor governments would have done.

China has been Myanmar's biggest enabler for decades. I don't know why some people think that it will change just because BD people want it to. China knows that BD need China more than China need BD. They also have interests in Myanmar. Heck they don't even care when ethnic Chinese are prosecuted in Myanmar. And some people here think that they will care about Rohingyas.

Chinese don't care about anything other than their own interests. That's fine and that's how it should be. I wish BD people had the same mentality but they give in to emotions easily without thinking where the interest lies.

I think you need to first improve on your English writing skills, rather than commenting on complex political issues that you have no idea of. Regards.

Blaming the Rohingya fighters are the safest option. It doesn't harm any geo-political interest.

China doesn't like to interfere into other people's domestic issues. Good or bad. Yes, there are already violence from both sides, but China also believes that Myanmar and Bangladesh government and people have enough intelligent and resolve to solve this issue peacefully. However, China can't be critical of what Myanmar's government doing because foreign entities will use that to attack the relationship between two countries. Like how foreign entities undermined the dam that China was building in Myanmar. If China is too critical of Myanmar then Myanmar will shut off the oil pipeline to China and then sells oil to India instead.

China is not supposed to act divine and it has no right to define the ARSA fighting against the MM army as the source of all problems. Rather, it is the long-term MM military terrorizing the Rohingyas that initiated the trouble in the first place many decades ago. But, why the civilians have to suffer collateral punishment at the hands of the MM military for the so-called crimes of the ARSA nationalists? China is showing its true color for sure.

China does not want Arakan to secede from MM, because it has stakes in gas exploration at the eastern coast of Arakan in the BoB.

Our maximum expectation should be a neutral China where Bangladesh-burma interest clash.China share direct border with burma and need burma for port in Bay of Bengal unlike Bangladesh. So, I don't think anyone among us expecting China to pick up Bangladesh over burma. If we can ensure Chinese neutrality over BD-burma issue, that should be considered a success.

We can't be callous about the Rohingya crisis in a same way the Chinese are for Kokang. We don't need myanmar in a same way that Chinese need them.Rohingya problem is a big problem for us and we should not ignore it over what ever benefit a friendly myanmar can bring to us.

What is a neutral China? What should be their reaction if we start arming Arakan rebels?

Rohingya problem should not be our problem. Also China is a strong country yet they don't try anything for the ethnic Chinese in Burma. Then why do you think BD can afford a conflict with Myanmar over Rohingya issue? Which would continue for years and cause unnecessary tension. Should we look for a India-Pak like relation with Myanmar?

China ususally doesn't care about the conflict of two other countries unless it directly affect them.If we support rebel in Chin state of myanmar which share border with BD then China will not even raise a brow. But Rakhine is different, this is where China is planning a sea port.So if BD start supporting Rohingya rebel then China will become active and will try to mediate between BD and myanmar and will create pressure on both party to find a solution.

In either way, our relation with burma is lost. Are you willing to accept millions of Rohingya refugee without any whimper to improve relation with burma? Unless you accept all of the Rohingya from them, they will not respond to any call of normalizing relation.Even if you normalize relation you will never get close friendship from them.burmese society and govt. are highly paranoid about Muslim. They have very much paranoia about having a populous, muslim country sharing border with them. So, they will always maintain a distance with Bangladesh no matter how much you appease them.So forget about a road connectivity with China through burma. We need to accept the fact that, we are living in a adverse neighborhood and should prepare accordingly.
