China advocates a nuke-free Israel

VIENNA - China on Thursday reaffirmed its support for the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East and said that Israel should join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as soon as possible.

China has always supported the strengthening of international nuclear non-proliferation regime and has been committed to promoting the universality, effectiveness and authority of the NPT, said Huang Wei, China's deputy envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Huang told the ongoing IAEA board meeting that China advocates that Israel should join the NPT as a non-nuclear country as soon as possible and put its all nuclear facilities under the IAEA's comprehensive safeguards.

Meanwhile, all countries in this region should earnestly fulfil their NPT obligations, sign and ratify IAEA comprehensive safeguards agreement and its additional protocols, Huang said.

Huang also said that China welcomed the proposal of holding in 2012 an international conference on a WMD-free (Weapon of mass destruction) zone in the Middle East, which was agreed at the 2010 NPT review conference.

China also welcomed the IAEA initiative to host a forum in November on building a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the region, and hoped that parties concerned strive to implement relevant recommendations made by the NPT review conference, Huang added

That's probably the only way to stop other Middle Eastern nations (like Iran) from developing their own nuclear weapons.

If Israel has nuclear weapons, and continues to earn the anger of the Muslim world, it is only a matter of time before the other nations in the Middle East start developing nuclear arms.

No, because Pakistan's nuclear arms aren't leading to any other countries developing nukes. Whereas in the case of Israel, it it pushing Iran to develop nukes, which might then cause Saudi Arabia and the other Arab nations to get them as well.

It is an empty rethoric. "When I point one finger at others three finger point at me". It equates to saying let me have the holy grail (read nukes) while you should not. Israel (or any world power) will hardly take it seriously.

There are only 9 counties with nuclear weapons. China, Russia, US, UK, France, India, Pakistan, Israel, North Korea.

Logic goes as:
India has it because China has it, Pakistan has it because India has it, Israel can say that since islam has a bomb so jews need it too.
US and Russia had it to counter each other. UK and France also had it to counter Russia and China. China had it because US had it.

Everybody point fingers at others. If china really wants to advocate a nuclear free middle east. Can it take a lead for a nuclear free world.

Now since every body is blaming each other. Currently US and China are super powers. In next 15-20 years China will be single most economically powerful nation.

Onus lies with China can it invite everybody on the table and try to generate a consensus for every nation to disarm?

I know it a difficult process especially in South Asia where it is a means to bridge disparity in the conventional warfare capability.

There is logic in the point made above.

However I feel its a case of shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted. What assurances does Israel have on its security in the days ahead. Recall that when Saddam was under attack he sent Scuds into Israel which wasnt even a part of the coallition .

Similarly the Arabs also find no safe guards against the Jews as of now.

Lastly I find it strange when Nuke nations begin to pintificate on others.

Agreed, mate. If there is a ban on nukes, let it be applicable to every nation on the country. It isn't fair to take away a countries nuclear capability after it has already been implemented, while other nations are allowed to keep theirs.

Israel is the country that will lose the most if Iran turns into a nuclear weapons power.

It won't affect us much either way.

True, but what's the guarantee that Iran won't develop nuclear weapons anyway even if Israel stops theirs?

This human desire for power is insatiable. A better solution for a peaceful world would be a ban of all nuclear weapons, but then again, actually implementing this ban would be near impossible.
