China is considering massively increasing its network of surveillance and observation satellites so it can monitor the entire planet, scientists working on the project said.

The government is mulling building more than 50 orbiting probes, which Chinese researchers said would make the nation's satellite surveillance network on par with, or even larger than, that of the United States.

The plan is being drafted to expand our regional monitoring capability to global coverage.

The number of surveillance and observation satellites now operated by China, which largely focus on the nation and surrounding region, is a state secret.

A satellite costs about 400 million yuan (HK$503 million) to build, according to estimates from experts in the mainland's space industry, meaning the total budget for the project would be at least 20 billion yuan.

Putting newly developed and being developed DFH4 and DFH5 platforms to good use?:D

doesn't that mean China will need foreign bases to continue their operation??USA's NRO has 5 ground sations,3 in USA,one in UK and another in Australia.probably such positions enable them reconing entire world(I don't want to include other forces' recon sats here).that means,If China has to continue entire operation, they'll need several offshore bases far away from mainland, one somewhere in South America and another somewhere in Pacific Ocean and one somewhere Europe/Africa(perhaps they'll need more.my guess is based on India's Deep Space Network's configuration).how they're going to make it feasible??plus, nobody knows the proper strength of USA's Recon Sats, but one thing is sure.they're and probably will maintain largest number of Recon sats and other space based military assets.their one ambitious plan which included next gen spy sats budgeting way over $28 Billion went to drain in mid 2000(killed probably during 2004-2005).but god knows how many of them they're going to have in near future.but one thing is sure, their equipment is far more superior than ones NASA has.in 2012,they donated two unused sats to NASA,and NASA claimed they're superior than Hubble Telescope. All Hail Lord of War.

Additionally, can the Chinese members shed some light on the satellite technology levels that have been achieved. I have seen people claiming that the resolution of Chinese sensor is not at par with the western ones, still at 2 m?

china has TDRS to do that job. no need for ground stations all over the globe. they can launch more if the current network is not enough.

actually, even then you need ground stations to communicate them.see,USA had nearly a dozen of these sats, but even then they needed to maintain ground stations all over the world to support TDRSS.

there is a nice video here to show how this tech works...

yeah, i see one in guam and the rests are in the US. the whole point of TDRS is to replace ground based stations in other countries. it says so in your wikipedia link. right now they only use em to manage few selected satellites in low orbit. next generation satellites will be more capable..

see this picture..what TDRSS does is keep constant contact with certain number of satellites.but they can't operate when they're not within sight.it just increases contact period, even when certain satellite or spaceship isn't within LOS of Ground station.but that doesn't mean they can keep contact with all the TDRSS type satellites from just one single Ground Station.you're going to need several others which will keep contact with other similiar type satellites with aren't within sight from China.there is no way you can track a sat with is placed over USA from your ground station in China, because its completely in the different side of the world, beyond any Line of Sight.to track that one, you'll need a ground station somewhere near North/South America.hope you understand.

also,read this.very informative.

Military Communications Satellite

also,I read somewhere that one TDRSS sat can only communicate with sats which is placed greater than 120 degree angle from the TDRSS's current position.

China also uses ships to control satelites.

yup, even Russia and India do that.but its mainly the procedure for Deep Space Network.nobody uses Ships for Recon Purpose, cause it is not short term activity like Deep Space Network.to control large swarm of Sats, everybody needs to disperse their Ground Stations.see, even India has Ground Stations in Mauritius,Russia,Norway,Indonesia,Brunei and Antarctica, but even that wasn't enough to track all these sats.we had to take help of USA for Mangalyan.

Yes,sometimes ship can't take place of foreign bases. However,China has rent some foreign bases for its satelites, which is also one way to solve this problem.

yup, thats the way,co operation.even USa has to co-operate with smaller countries in this matter.
