Dec. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez hinted that the U.S. may be behind a “very strange” bout of cancer affecting several leaders aligned with him in South America.

Chavez, speaking a day after Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, said the Central Intelligence Agency was behind chemical experiments in Guatemala in the 1940s and that it’s possible that in years to come a plot will be uncovered that shows the U.S. spread cancer as a political weapon against its critics.

“It’s very difficult to explain, even with the law of probabilities, what has been happening to some of us in Latin America,” Chavez said in a nationally televised speech to the military. “Would it be so strange that they’ve invented technology to spread cancer and we won’t know about it for 50 years?”

Chavez, who was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in June and had a baseball-sized tumor removed in Cuba, has called for a regional summit of leaders who have battled cancer including Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva and Paraguay’s Fernando Lugo.

“I’m just sharing my thoughts, but it’s very, very, very strange,” Chavez said. “Evo take care of yourself, Correa, be careful, we just don’t know,” he said, referring to Evo Morales and Rafael Correa, the leaders of Bolivia and Ecuador.

Thomas Mittnacht, press director at the U.S. embassy in Caracas, declined to comment when reached by telephone.

Re-election Bid

Chavez, a former tank commander who has led South America’s largest oil producer since 1999 and will seek a third consecutive six-year term in October elections, says that the U.S. was involved in a coup against him in 2002 that briefly ousted the socialist leader before he was reinstated by the military and supporters.

The 57-year-old leader also accuses the U.S. of plotting an invasion of Venezuela to capture its oil reserves.

Chavez, who continues to send the U.S. more than 800,000 barrels of oil a day, said that former Cuban leader Fidel Castro has warned him about assassination attempts after surviving what he has claimed are hundreds of plots by the U.S. since he took power in 1959.

“Fidel always tells me, ‘Chavez be careful, they’ve developed technology, be careful with what you eat, they could stick you with a small needle,’” the Venezuelan leader said today. “In any case, I’m not accusing anyone, I’m just using my freedoms to reflect and issue comments on very strange events that are hard to explain.”

Anyone buy this poison theory? Close case's Iran's constant scientists deaths.

"Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time it's enemy action."

Chavez at times may sound like a nut case but one has to wonder. I didn't know that Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is fighting a form of cancer as well.

I remember this guy who had announced the martial law on TV and dead for lymph cancer in 2009,just 20 years late at the anniversary day of 1989 Tiananmen event.

A cup of coke in Disneyland may spread cancer.

How is this TV anchor important? Me thinks it was just a coincidence. The cancer diagnosis of leaders of Latin America is very suspicious IMO.

For Gad sake he is just a reporter. He does what he is told by his bosses. Even in independent TV station one can't go outside the agenda set and this is China you are talking about.

I know, all other reporters refused to do the work told by their boss at that time to declare the martial law and only this guy stood out, really remarkable.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff

Paraguay President Fernando Lugo

Plus Evo Morales and Rafael Correa, the leaders of Bolivia and Ecuador, as suggested by Chaves

This is a horrifying situation.

Chavez cancer comments 'reprehensible'

The Obama administration is denouncing Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez for questioning whether the U.S. might be behind a rash of cancer cases among Latin American leaders.

The State Department on Thursday said Chavez's comments were "horrific and reprehensible." Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said they were not worthy of further response.

Chavez has long questioned whether the U.S. government could be plotting to oust him. But earlier this week he went far beyond that, saying it was very strange that he and the leaders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay have struggled with cancer.

He said he was not accusing the U.S. and does not have any proof. But he asked, in his words, "Would it be strange if they had developed a technology to induce cancer and no one knew it?"

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff overcame lymphoma in 2009, and former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is being treated for throat cancer. Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo was diagnosed with lymphoma last year. Chavez underwent surgery for a tumour last summer.

All the leaders are considered to the left of the political spectrum, with policies aimed at reducing poverty. But Chavez — who has overseen the nationalization of Venezuela's oil and gold production, among other measures — is by far the most vocal critic of the U.S.

Although Correlation does not prove causation and these leaders aren't young, it is odd that they'd all be diagnosed with cancers.

This is a reason why .. world is not able to unite against USA...
Because of leader like this nut ... may be his stand against USA is correct .. but way they behave on world stage and speak any thing for local consumption .. (basically they think.. their people are nuts like them so serving them expired weeds).. is making other world leaders to maintain distance from them..
You have rights to speak against USA .. but speak with some sense.. you can't blame fever to your dog on USA..
Leaders like him is giving USA and NATO countries reasons to go against them ..
Any one ever heard any BS from any other western leaders from North America or most of European countries..
Unfortunately barking against USA and creating virtual threat of SA against their country is key to maintain power for them .. and this will give power to USA to act against them in future without any opposition from other countries ..
