(MENAFN - Daily Outlook Afghanistan) Chabahar - Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development says the rail, air and road routes connecting Chabahar port to Afghanistan and then Central Asia which will facilitate transportation of goods and passengers is a top priority for his ministry.
In an International Conference on the Development of the Chabahar Port here on Tuesday, Mohammad Eslami putlined the economic and transit capacities of the port.
He noted that the railway link from Chabahar to Afghanistan and from there to Central Asia as well as another one connecting China to Europe via Iran were among the main programs in Iran's future railway network development plans.
The official said that the transit route of Afghanistan and Central Asia via the eastern border of the country will significantly shorten the Chabahar-Afghanistan distance.
The Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development added that widespread investment in various transportation sectors, especially in the port, sea and customs transit projects and infrastructure along with stong government support has made the Chabahar port a regional transit hub between India and Afghanistan.
He said the removal of some existing obstacles and progress of the development plans will lead to a transit boom in this direction.
Eslami noted that a new chapter in the life of the Chabahar Port which includes players at national, regional and international levels will prompt the comprehensive development of the deprived region it is located in. (IRNA

Iran is getting ready to put into operation the Qazvin-Rasht railway to join the International North South Transportation Corridor (INSTC) and connect to India and Europe via railroad network.

"By completing the rail installation on this route, Rasht would join the railway network and this national mega project would connect Astara to Bandar Abbas Port that will link south of Iran to Azerbaijan and Russia," said the Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Kheyrollah Khademi, Trend reports citing IRNA.

"This international corridor in north of Iran would facilitate the cargo transportation via this route and would be efficient and economical," he added. "The project is important not only for Iran, but for all regional countries. India has recently requested for completion of the project to facilitate it's cargo transportation to Europe and Russia via Iran."

Khademi said Iran has invested $16.5 million in construction of this railway since 2014, while the current government has assigned $2.6 million to the railroad operation.

The Qazvin-Rasht railway is 164 km long, and is further connected to Anzali and Astara. Construction of the Rasht-Qazvin Railway Project has started in 2006.

The Qazvin-Rasht-Astara railway is part of the North-South Transport Corridor to connect Northern Europe and South Asia, including the railways of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia.

The plan to establish international corridor was signed by Iran, India and Russia in 2000 to boost economic and trade ties and reduce the distance for cargo transportation between India and Europe via Iran.

The international corridor would connect the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf via Iran and links to the Caspian Sea , Russia and northern Europe. The corridor's operation would cut the costs by 30 percent, while the duration of transportation would be 40 percent shorter.

Well Its local and regional infrastructure on which Bharat is trying to impose itself. There is no foreign investment involved in the project, Iran and Central Asians are working on regional connectivity and you are just a guest who have to load the goods on gangadeshi ports, then you have to unload it on iranian ports and then long land route.

the question Is, whether it more economical then Pakistani land route to Central Asia? The answer is No.

the key point is security your land route pass through Afghanistan that part is net secure at all and I wonder how Good Afghanistan Rail-Road infra structure is ?
by the way this is not for central ASIA , its for Europe and Russia, the ones who want to trade with Azerbaijan , Georgia, Russia , Armenia and Belarus ,.... (In short east of Europe and North west of Asia minus Turkey as they are already connected to the rest of Iran Railroad) benefit from this 160km railroad far more than the rest of the people. and for those countries its a lot shorter than Pakistan land route

This infrastructure is part of the INSTC corridor, which is a joint project between India, Iran, and Russia. Afghanistan is only a small part of this. And this is more economically efficient when you consider that ships can carry far more goods than trucks or rail, the whole purpose of the corridor is to provide infrastructure that allows for the most efficient transfer of goods, and that most of Pakistan and Afghanistan are insecure and infested with millitants, unlike Iran, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. But why are you so obsessed with Chabahar? Don't you have CPEC? Wasn't CPEC supposed to be operational ten years ago?

Pakistan have railway link with Iran as well. Now to avoid Pakistan, Indians have to load their goods in India, unload in Iranian port and then they have to make journey ahead. headache for exporters and time consuming as well. in case if Pakistan open its route, India just have to send its train all the way to Europe.

First of all its not a joint project since it involves no foreign investment, its western and Central Asian countries who are working on connectivity and infrastructure and you are just a user. the only role of India in it is to load ships from Indian ports and unload in Iran and then via rail (So rail is involved here as well), so its expected that you have to pay higher prices, duties, taxes then usual corridors where exports invest.

As for law and order in Pakistan, well remind me when was the last time any Indian was attacked in Pakistan? and why are you struck to Afghans only when Pakistan have rail link with Iran as well?

You do realize India has invested billions in Chabahar right? And INSTC is a joint project initially conceived by Russia, Iran, and India. India HAS invested in rail construction.

And given the proximity of ports in Maharashtra and Gujarat to Iran, we can export more goods by ship then by rail. Going through Pakistan through Iran is the same distance as going by sea except that trains cannot carry as much as ships. There is a reason most trade occurs at sea. This project is basically to link Russia and the landlocked CA republics to a permanent warm-water port in iran which in turn connects them to the Middle East and India. True win win situation.
