When Iranian and Indian leaders signed the agreement to jointly develop the Chabahar port—some 1,800 kilometres south of Tehran—last summer, it was heralded as a project that would transform relations between the two countries.

“We should perceive the agreement as an engine of growth, and I believe it is the beginning of a new era in the Indo-Iran relationship..,” Nitin Gadkari, India’s roads and shipping minister, had declared on May 22, 2016. A day later Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani signed on the dotted line, formalising New Delhi’s commitment of $500 million towards the project.

Nine months on, Chabahar seems dead in the water: The Indian and Iranian governments are now squabbling over delays, even as newly-elected US president Donald Trump’s hawkish stance towards Tehran threatens to hamstring the project.

The ongoing diplomatic finger-pointing is a curious affair. Indian officials insist that New Delhi has $150 million ready for disbursement but the Iranians haven’t completed the paperwork necessary to release the funds, The Economic Times newspaper reported. The Iranians told the newspaper that the delay was from the Indian side, without explaining further.

Conceived in 2003, the interruptions in implementation of the Chabahar project belie its importance: India views it as a conduit to bypass Pakistan and make deeper inroads into energy-rich Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia, and beyond. It is also a counterbalance to increasing Chinese influence in the region; Beijing has built a deep-water port in Pakistan’s Gwadar, only 72 kilometres from Chabahar, which became operational last November.

Backroom bickering aside, India’s pursuit of Chabahar faces another obstacle: deteriorating US-Iran ties.

After the thaw during his predecessor’s term, relations between Washington DC and Tehran have nosedived since Trump took office. There’s been a visa ban on Iranians (along with six other Muslim-majority countries), and fresh economic sanctions on individuals and companies following missile tests. “Iran has been formally PUT ON NOTICE for firing a ballistic missile,” the US president said in a tweet.

Such a situation puts India in a tricky spot: It wants to do business with Iran, but not at the cost of disrupting ties with the new US administration. “The Trump administration will be a difficult partner to deal with on this issue,” Harsh V Pant, professor of International Relations at King’s College London, told the Mint newspaper.

Chabahar is a risk for India for as long as US continues to impose sanctions. The port itself will be a success and will help cater needs of Iran and may be partial needs of Afghanistan and Central Asia but nothing too much or too little

more like insignificant for everybody except Iran

India has promised North South corridor and will connect Russia , Central Asia through Iran to Arabian Sea.

Right, and a port 60 kms away will soon become the centre of world trade. UK and France will trade through that port.

Sir both Gwadar and Chabahar have some limitations and the distance of 100km is quite remarkable. They both are likely to play important role in the coming years (possibly largest ports of Pakistan and Iran) and I am not fan of comparing then either but the fact is, Gwadar because of being slightly more deeper have the potential to have more berths which means more cargo handling capacity at its shore.

The port of Chabahar will be a success but may come with limitations if the US continues to impose sanctions. It is expected that maximum cargo handling capacity for port of Chabahar is 86 million tons which is the size of very respectable ports in the world (would have been one of the biggest in Europe) and the maximum cargo handling capacity in Gwadar is around 400-500 million tons although I do agree that man made port is always an option to further enhance the size of port if needed but that is very far from now

Naah, that shocking footage was made into thug life videos lol which were everywhere on social media and i've been watching korean, italian and hollywood since i was 10, so it would be an insult to my movie taste to be a fan if bollywood, yes 2-3 good movies were produced in 70 odd years lol like omkara and rang de basanti but which i watched and enjoyed along time a go, anyways if u have even a shred of taste u wouldnt be a bollywood fan either, birng an indian doesnt neccesarily mean that u ought to have bad taste..

Sanctions for the last many years haven't prevented India from buying Iranian Oil, went cash payments weren't allowed, we even paid in Gold... Iran and India have ancient relations and won't be affected by sanctions...

On the other hand, India just became 'Major defense partner' for the US, so the tech flow will be unhindered and continue. Unlike Pak, who captures and holds known terrorists just before important 'aid' related meetings so Unkil can throw some dollars into the 'begging bowl', India has enough regional pull to do what it sees are best for it's interests. Heck, our close friendship with Iran doesn't bother the Israelis either.
