CERN wants more Indian scientists, engineers

The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), which is pioneering the search for the Higgs particle, would like to see more involvement of Indian industry, scientists and engineers during the course of future research, CERN director general Rolf Heuer said on Saturday.

Addressing the press after delivering the C V Raman Memorial Lecture at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Prof Heuer said India has a “fantastic” capacity to contribute to the ongoing search at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for the Higgs, which gives fundamental particles their mass.

“India is full of eager and well-educated young people. I would like to see more involvement of the Indian industry and scientists for fellowships, which is only possible when India becomes an associate member at CERN,” Prof Heuer said.

He also emphasised on the quality of researchers from India. “We have roughly more than 200 Indian scientists registered at CERN. We have more scientific researchers from India than China. I must say that the quality of your researchers is very high,” Prof Heuer said.

What Next?

The $4.75 billion LHC was shut down on Thursday for maintenance work. It will be resumed again in 2015. The LHC, which Prof Heuer described as “a super microscope and the largest refrigerator in the world”, has been running since 2009.

Good to hear Indian scientists doing well..but India would definitely need these talents at home than abroad..we have already lost a lot with so many of our IITians and doctors moving abroad.

Screw it Indians should work for India. We don't have a CERN type thing here. Then build it. Last time we were rejected a supercomputer we built it including new Indian compilers and assembly language, something that Indians had never seen before.

A 16 year old Indians boy cracked a 350 year old problem involving projectiles being effected with air resistance. Only problem is that he is German Indian. Could he do that in India??

Similarly, all Indian nobel prizes are with Indian Americans. Americans and Brits every year come up with new Visa policies to attract talented Indians.

Its my appeal to all Indians learn about Vikram Sarabhai, Homi Bhabha etc. They all went outside the country to study, gained experience, contacts but came back to use this knowledge to create marvels for India. They brought revolutions in Indian scientific world. Indian engineers should devote sometime for their nation during their work life.
