Cellphone in 1928? Woman in Chaplin film baffles all

LONDON: A Charlie Chaplin film clip showing a woman using a mobile phone has left viewers stumped.

The baffling scene is found in the extras section of Charlie Chaplin's 1928 movie 'The Circus' , Daily Mail reported. It shows people at the premiere of the film at Manns Chinese Theatre in Hollywood . The footage shows an older woman with her hand held up to left-hand side of her face as she talks. There is no one around for her to be speaking to.

The bizarre anachronism was unearthed by film buff George Clark on his Charlie Chaplin box set. He says he has shown it to over 100 people and no one can come up with a convincing explanation. Some viewers have suggested she is listening to a portable radio. Others say she may be displaying signs of schizophrenia and covering her face to hide the fact that she is talking aloud to herself. It has also been suggested that she is simply trying to hide her face from the camera so she is not filmed.

If you watch the video she appears to be holding something and talking into it. But honestly time travel is nothing amazing, infact i'm from the future...

I was skeptic , first , I said ok she is may be holding a hat or something .... or scratching head but if you go frame by frame

See frame 0:23 she turns and is actually speaking into cell phone

She , clearly was holding something , and her mouth was moving
meaning she was indeed talking into something

Before the clip ships she clearly is smiling

If it were a mobile phone, what about cellular towers? how would the mobile work in that era without any exchanges and towers.

Its NOT a cell phone for the following obvious reasons.

a. The reaction of passer-by's is passive and non-intrusive which means that they are not interested in what this lady is doing which leads to the fact that whatever she is holding in her hand is nothing new to that time.

b. Even if such technology existed in the times, it probably would have been mark highly classified and chances of it being used so openly and by such a demure persons are extremely remote

c. If its a 'time traveler' as the theory suggests of this video, then she should be very aware that her 21st century mobile will not work in the early 20 century era. She should also be aware that you cannot communicate between time lines etc and the protocol of time travel is essentially not o disturb the sequence of events which could invariably change the future in which we reside today.

Conclusively, this is either a portable radio (which could have had the I Phone status in the elite of those days) to whihc this lady is listening and her lips movement indicate that she is 'wow...ing' perhaps by listening to the recording the the Charlie Chaplin show being broad-casted on radio!

Impossible, portable radio is an invention based on semiconductor based transistor after the small semiconductor based transistor was invented (in the Bell Labs I think) which happened much later than this movie.
