Rashidul Islam, 30, was rescued from Mastarbari border area in critical condition early hours Wednesday.
A Bangladeshi cattle trader has allegedly been tortured to death by Indian Border Security Force personnel on Wednesday.

Fellow cattle traders rescued him lying down in critical condition Bangladesh-India border near Mastarbari border area in Lalmonirhat’s Patgram early hours Wednesday, said Manik Hossain, a member of the Jengra union parishad under Patgram upazila. Rashidul is the son of one Taslim Uddin of Mominpur village under the union.

Rashidul died while he was being taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH), confirms Manik.

Manik claimed marks of tortures with baton, boot and bayonet were visible on different parts of Rashidul’s body. The Dhaka Tribune could not independently verify the claim.

Major Muniruzzaman, acting director of battalion-6 of Border Guard Bangladesh’s (BGB), confirms union parishad member Manik’s version of the event.

BGB was investigating whether Rashidul was tortured to death by the BSF, said Major Muniruzzaman, adding a letter has already been sent to the respective BSF unit condemning the incident.

The BGB has also asked for a flag meeting over the issue, the BGB acting director said.

Patgram police has already assumed the custody of the body and sent it to the RMCH hospital morgue for autopsy.
