Casualties feared as militants attack Iran army parade

https://www.thehindu.com/news/inter...an-state-tv/article25014133.ece?homepage=true

Gunmen fired on a military parade in southwestern Iran on Saturday, killing 11 members of the Revolutionary Guards, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported, in one of the worst attacks on the elite force.

State television said the assault, which wounded more than 30 people, targeted a stand where Iranian officials were gathered to watch an annual event marking the start of the Islamic Republics 1980-88 war with Iraq.

A video distributed to Iranian media showed soldiers crawling on the ground as gunfire blazed in their direction. One soldier picked up a gun and got to his feet as women and children fled for their lives.

Ali Hosein Hoseinzadeh, deputy governor in Khuzestan province, was quoted as saying the death toll was expected to rise. One of those killed was a journalist.

The bloodshed struck a blow to security in OPEC oil producer Iran, which has been relatively stable compared with neighbouring Arab countries that have faced upheaval since the 2011 uprisings across the region.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack in Iran’s southwest.

State television blamed “takfiri elements,” a reference to Sunni Muslim militants, for the attack. Ahvaz is in the centre of Khuzestan province, where there have been sporadic protests by the Arab minority in mainly Shia Iran.

Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif blamed the bloodshed on “regional terror sponsors,” language that usually refers to Iran’s enemies Saudi Arabia and Israel, and “their U.S. masters,” and vowed that Tehran would respond decisively.

A video on state television's website showed confused soldiers at the scene of the attack. Standing in from of the stand, one asked: “Where did they come from?” Another responded: “From behind us.”

Four militants carried out the attack and two of them were killed, according to ISNA. There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack in the city of Ahvaz.

Iran was holding similar parades in several cities including the capital Tehran and the port of Bandar Abbas on the Gulf.

“Shooting began by several gunmen from behind the stand during the parade. There are several killed and injured,” a correspondent told state television.

The semi-official news agency Mehr said further shooting broke out as some of the attackers who managed to escape were being chased.

ISNA said an unnamed spokesman for the Revolutionary Guards blamed Arab nationalists backed by Saudi Arabia for the attack.

Tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia have surged in recent years, with the two countries supporting opposite sides in wars in Syria and Yemen and rival political parties in Iraq and Lebanon.

Attacks on the military are rare in Iran.

Last year, in the first deadly attack claimed by Islamic State in Tehran, 18 people were killed at the Parliament and mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder and first supreme leader of the Islamic Republic.

I know buddy the truth hurts..
What truth?

US and Israel are NOT saint(s). I have been vocal against numerous American and Israeli actions but I do not feel the need to berate them at every turn and in every thread. What they are, is clear to anybody.

Do you think Iraq, Iran, Syria, and [insert name of any other country], are saint(s) on the other hand? We live in the era of HYPOCRISY, my friend. If you do not understand this, then your eyes are shut.

I see PATTERNS of HYPOCRISY repeated across the world. People no longer study Holy Quran, and no longer heed its message.

Iran finds itself in a troubling situation due to internal strife (SECTARIAN and POLITICAL), and also due to its meddling in the affairs of other states. All you need to do is to study its history and try to connect the dots.

The event which I highlighted in an earlier post, showcase Iranian behavior on the lines of US; Iran struck a separatist compound in Iraq with massive firepower and killed many there. Why Iran did not request Iraqi authorities to take action against them? Some would argue that Iran did the right thing under the given circumstances; some would disagree.

Do you know that Iraqi people burned down Iranian Consulate in BASRA after Iranian strikes? Do you know where BASRA is located, and it is Shia-dominated?

FYI: https://www.thenational.ae/world/mena/protesters-set-iranian-consulate-ablaze-in-basra-1.768021

Why do you think US - PAK relations are strained? Because US have a history of taking unilateral actions inside Pakistan and have also disrespected Pakistani contributions to War On Terror.

I am looking into how Iran finds itself in troubling spot at present. Accusing US and Israel for conspiring against Iran, isn't the whole picture. They are certainly conspiring against Iran, but there is more to this story than meet's the eye.

So it’s official state tv said Sunni groups involved in this. Sad to see Muslim are killing Muslims .
RIP. .... Arrest them irrespective of any religion and hang them.
We should not tolerate terrorism & extremism in any form by any group.

.
Why did they shoot kids?
Update me when you get some more information

In most cases, high-ranking military forces usually look at the ceremony from distance, and people will stand behind these military forces. They often do not attend the ceremony and watch the ceremony with their families, along with ordinary people that are behind them.

. . .
RIP... Condoleneces for Iran.
These photos reminded me of the terrorist attack that was in Russian Kaspiysk during military perade on 9 May 2002. The same inhuman cruelty and desire to kill as many people as possible, no matter who they are - soldiers or women and childrens among viewers :(

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajeun . My deep condolence to all Iranians and fallen families . R I P .
