What's new

Cars, Cars and Cars.

I learnt driving on this Land cruiser, when dad as well as MP was not around :p:

Wherever dad was posted, my first aim would be to get the confidence of driver. Te driver showed me basics of accelerator, clutch, brakes and gears. I used to reverse and forward in the drive way. As my confidence grew, i started driving in colony until our neighbour, a colonel sahab reported my driving to my dad. Thank God the driver wasnt around, he was handing over things to batman in kitchen coz he would have got the blame for handing me the keys. anyways long story short, he was saved, i was told to lay of the RKR.

Like i adhered..........i was on road after a few months again...... I was caught twice by dad.

The first time he told the driver not to let me have the Jeep.
The second time he told me that he will teach me driving and my nightmare began of driving dad's old car with him in passenger seat. After every jumma prayers, i had to drive the car to home and my trip was miserable than ever.

As dad ranked progressed up in Army, my choice of driven vehicles also expanded :-)

The era of staff cars started for dad. My mom used to lecture me that dad is getting promoted so i should also maintain integrity for his regard. My itching for getting behind wheels had to be kept under control

First came a car like this, i forgot the name, crown or corona. It was in rawalpindi so didnt get much chance to drive. However i did speed it up once on peshawar road in rawalpindi and loved it. when near Chaklala, i handed it over it to driver.

next came a corona 1985, below.

as soon as the driver came home after dropping dad to office, i would jump in car before mom had any plans and drive on deserted roads at the ends of cantonment with driver.

I was spotted many times by MP, but dad was highest ranking official in the cantonment. No reports made. I did scratch the car a few times, minor ones but never got the driver in trouble, i used to man-up with my heart beating faster than anything in the world and walk up to him and tell him its my fault.

Most of the times he would glare at me for a few seconds and then continue doing whatever he was doing while i stood quietly and then slipped out of the room.

The car below was a beast. Corona 1995.

By this time, dad had become immune to by habits and chose to ignore even when driver gave him reports of my driving.
It had a 1.6 or 2.0 litre petrol i think and the the way it ran on GT road was amazing.

I was about to have an incident once and before i could tell dad, the driver told him. I was banned from driving this until the driver changed and i took him in confidence the very first day and things got back to normal:cheers:I was behind wheels again from time to time.

The gates of the house were huge and guard used to stand on all gates. On night, me, brother and cousins decided to take the car at around 1am for a spin on roads. We arranged for the keys but the opening of gates an issue and so was starting the car in the drive way.

The guard was tasked to open the gates as softly as possible and push the car in neutral outside the gate. This was accomplished in 5 minutes and i started the car when outside and drove slowly till i reached the main road and from there zoomed in first gear to 40km/hr.:D

dad started getting posted to departments where civil number plate vehicles also joined his entourage and made my life even more colourful :victory:

I was already very conscious driving vehicles with Army markings number plates and formation signs. My choice had expanded exponentially :pakistan: By this time Dad had escort and guards with him so sometimes going somewhere with him meant travelling with a few officers and a group of soldiers.

Just naming a few notable mentions below...Dad preferred his official car, while i preferred to use all the cars at his disposal, haha :yahoo:

A Pajero.
When Dad used to come and pick me up from a certain Military Academy for my vacations, i would drive this and dad would sit with me. Perhaps, he knew i was aching to get my hands on wheels after being locked up for 2-3 months as a cadet.

The driver for this one was hard to tame, he was a pathan and very quiet, probably an NCO. i used to load up friends in this Hilux especially on Chand raat in cantonments and the fun was beyond imagination in those days. Now i think i quite over did a few things as part of my late teens.

got the above corolla brand new as 2001 model,I remember taking this corolla to 90km/hr in 2nd gear and the driver was about to jump out of window8-) My driving habits had now come under control and i hated driving this car to the military institution again after vacations finished.

I had all the good times in my teens and late teens due to my dad and i miss those times now.

Well said bro,Very well said I miss my high school and teenage days too even tho I'm just 21 now.
Trust me man those childhood friends and times are never coming back,Sometimes I meet my school friends and they say the same.It was just something different about those teenage years.Anyways

My first car was a Suzuki cultus Oh man I wish I could remember how I learned to drive but my colony was kind of huge and I already knew the basics of the car from my elder brother as I grew up with his car.
The funny thing is I only knew how to start the car nothing else,So I used to ask our driver to park the car outside the house,Then I used to start it ,I said man I ain't asking someone and creating drama around so I didn't ask anyone ,and trust me I learned to drive the car 100% by myself.lol
So I remember with the cultus one day there was a huge rain storm and I was trying to park the car inside the house like rambo because apparently for me I had accomplished to drive the car,So I went in halfway and got stuck in the slope of the house  I barely learned how to drive and had I backed up and slowly got it up the slope I could've parked it but I had no idea,I was like trying my best to force the car go up and the car suddenly seems to be is on the edge of the gate  next I know backing up and BOOM! there goes the side mirror ,Lmao my dad comes and says Kid Why are you driving in rain? so after some besti he took up the side mirror and went Inside the house.

I remember all the fun times on this car ,The high speeds ,the loud music ,the amazing high school days with friends.
Oh man I shouldn't have told my dad to sell the car.

Cars and one other thing I can't say are the two things that get guy's fired up. So I open this thread not for plastering fancy cars but the real cars you have owned or driven. The good, the bad and the ugly.

Cars tend to become part of your life and because they are always with you we get attached to them. I begin with the car I learnt to drive. A banged up

chevy_malibu_sedan_4d_two_tone_1979.jpg

1978 Chevrolet Malibu was the first car my dad gave my brother and I to share.
After my brother wrecked it he decided to buy us crappy cheapo cars.

1985_dodge_aries-pic-38831-1600x1200.jpeg

We had a crappy Dodge Aries (~1985?)..which didn't last long

1986-plymouth-reliant.jpg

Then a crappy Plymouth Reliant (~1987? (basically the same car)

3-12-12-009-e1331852235292.jpg

~1989? Chevrolet Celebrity (better than the Dodge/Plymouth)

bird01.jpg

Then in 1994 I bought my own new car..and things got a little better!! Drove it for 15 years,

I'll skip the rest Pretty boring in comparison.

@Sarge That was great share. A car is not just a piece of metal and engineering. It becomes part of your life and for ever leave a trail of memories - as you shared, they make awesome reading.

I drive an Audi Q5 - 3.2 Quattro
Nice but too chunky - not for me.

@Hamartia Antidote Thanks for that. Interesting read. Your cars remind us how same and differant US is from UK. Those cars are huge and just amazingly limousine like. I can't even begin to imagine what going to pick up some milk from local Tesco would be like on one of these "ships".

Can you sail them ????

Any more members want to contribute?

@Vergennes What about you. Maybe you learnt to drive on one of these wonders? You guy's began to make them in age of horse and were still making them in age space travel.

Or maybe a cool DS

With a back lack this? Bootiful?

Interior. Must have been made for men from Mars? Look at that teering wheel? And the rear view mirror on the dash? Wow. Eccentricy to the limits.

Actually that was considered barely a mid-sized car. I never drove my father's full-sized Buick or my mother's full-sized Pontiac Grand Safari station wagon (5.875 meters long https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_Grand_Safari ). So I can't tell you how a big car drove.

Viper101 had a big boat Buick.

The Safari had the coolest automatic rear hatch door ever. The guy isn't even using the switch correctly. The glass and door can open and close simultaneously.

Aha,nope. :P
I still remember that our neighbor had a beautiful DS and that I was so jealous. I was so exited when he sometimes proposed me a ride. My fahter nearly liked his Peugeot 504 more than my mother and me,and he never wanted to change his 504 for another car. What a car ! :P

. . . . .
My first car I bought it when I am doing FSC just for 65000PKR
