Intelligence reports suggest that terrorist outfits are focusing on the federal capital and other large cities of the country after the military operation Zarb-e-Azb has broken their backs and demolished their command and control systems.
The military operation has curbed their capacity to act in an organised manner but their splinter groups are present in various areas and possibility of a backlash to the operation cannot be ruled out. The intelligence gathering agencies have warned the relevant authorities to stay alert as long as hideouts of terrorists in different parts of the country aren’t eliminated.
Highly-placed sources told The News that the government has decided not to use the army, called under Article 245 of the Constitution in the federal capital, to check any political rally and no duty would be assigned to it that would have any direct or indirect link to blocking political activities. It was an intelligence leak that helped the administration of the federal capital last week to thwart a scheme of an offshoot of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to target and destroy the Rawal Dam and its spillway that is used for supply of water for the twin-cites of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The government doesn’t go public about several threats since it could upset the people but it is monitoring the whole situation. It demonstrates that the government’s intelligence network is effectively working and producing results.
The sources revealed that at least six highly sensitive installations in and around the federal capital received such serious threats during last seven weeks and some arrests were also made by the law enforcing agencies. The arrests were also placed on record. Sources disclosed that the government could enhance the number of troops for the assistance of the civil administration at a later stage if the situation so warrants.
The government could requisite more troops but at the moment not a single new deployment has been made on the first day of the implementation of Article 245. It has provided due legal protection to the troops already engaged in security duties in the federal capital.
The government is also prepared to take the leaders of various parliamentary groups, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) andvarious parliamentary groups including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Awami Muslim League (AML) of Sheikh Rashid Ahmad into confidence about the threat perceptions that necessitated the invoking of article 245 of the constitution and calling of the Army for the purpose of security and in aide to the civil administration, the sources added.
