Candidates for Mig-21 replacement in Vietnam

* Engine
* Avionics, * Ejection Seats
Most avionics is already developed by DRDO & incorporated in LCA.

Although serious failure for DRDO. But now Isreal is helping us, which will be mostlymade in INDIA. DRDO also made radar for AEW&C, now they just need to miniature it.

* WVRAAMs
Right now,ok no.

* BVRAAMs
Are you ever heard about Astra?

It is also developed by DRDO & now IAF also use these laser guided bombs.

* IFR probe
VPAF dont have any air refuelar right now. So they also dont need it.:smokin:

No body really know how much Vietnam's defense budget is. They never report the real number. They spent from 2.5% to 6% of GDP on military in year 2012. US reported was 5.2 billions. Expert guested Vietnam spent 6 billion. They reported 2.4 billion

Are NOT Indian made, and you call it an Indian fighter?, you wont be able to export it because of so many reasons and strings attached to it.

Why dont you visit LCA page and get updated yourself once in a while.

chiengolee and indians....stop derailing Thread, Topic is "Candidates for Mig-21 replacement in Vietnam".

Only sukhoi is the candidate, as stated Sweden won't sell Gripens to any country having disputes, Neither will US.

Replacing 8 squadrons is not an easy task slowly gradually and when cash is available, it is a long process and could take 15+ Years. Technology plays a vital role A single modern su-27 eliminates the need of 2-3 mig-21s.

Lastly don't include LCA it is a struggling project indian navy and air force would induct them as face saving perhaps LCA would be a good advance trainer then BAE Hawk too bad corrupts have ordered 132-189 Hawks and killed LCA as a potential Trainer.

Big fail, then explain me why did we order new GE engines if it is for a face saving exercise of 40 initial LCA order?

Believe it or not, LCA will be a strong contender for replacement of Migs.

Gripen is not for sale to any country with disputes [hindustan was an exception].

The only choice vietnam has is a slow phase out of mig-21 and induction of su-27/su-30 in good numbers over the next 15+ Years. I highly doubt vietman would maintain the 144 number to number replacement but the number could end up to 4 squadrons over the 15+ Years period.

I agree. It is not easy for a developing country like Vietnam to have a modern airforce. Gripen is not a good choice even if Sweden can sell to Vietnam.

The most likely scenario is Vietnam gradually buys more some dozen Russian jet fighters. As for the MIGs, as long as they can fly, they are still good for air patrol and weapons platform for ground attack and support missions.

Given the relationship of Vietnam and China, I expect US to offload some of its earlier generation (block 52 or so) F 16s here.

no go for US jet fighters: weapons embargo and too expensive
Unless the US decides to end the sanction and gives the jets for free (or much cheaper than Russian planes).

Ordering GE Engines signifies death of kavari engines in LCA project. I am not questioning the export of LCA to vietnam in the future IF US gives go ahead with GE engine and israelis with their avionics good for you. If MK1 is being priced $30M and MK2 say $35M-38M this means a basic SU-30 is $35M why would vietnam want to buy LCA if it can afford su-27/30 for $35M the upgrades can proceed later, look at it this way su-27/su-30 has bigger legs can fly longer caps carry more payload ideal platform already in place slow replacement is not a problem instead of introducing a new platform but yes smaller numbers of LCA could be a good start IF GE engines are permitted to be exported with LCA by US. You should remember Saab Viggen and US unless you pay royalties to US because Americans is not willing to sell modern fighters to vietnam so GE engine is in question for exports.

Because it has lower maintenance cost & also very low life cycle cost compare to flanker, nearly equivalent to mig21.

We are also not saying /dreaming about LCA in VPAF, we are just counting probabilities.:no:

Dnt you know LCA have much better engine, Radar, Avionics compare to your fighter ;)

If LCA fits for trainer then think about your super duper fighter .... :lol:

Why not have a look at Lca tejas mark 2 . Its quite a potent machine going by the specs .
