F-35a Fighter Jet

The new Canadian government will dump F-35 stealth fighter jet and will open a fresh competition to replace Canada’s ageing fighter jets.

The victorious Liberals leader Justin Trudeau had earlier in September during the election campaign had said that if elected, he would scrap F-35 program and would reopen fresh competition for Canada’s fighter jet replacement program.

"There are many other fighters at much lower price points that we can use that have been proven, that we will actually be able to deliver in a timely way," he said at the time.

Australia has committed AUS $24 billion to buy the new fighter jets. Australia and Canada had joined with the US in a nine-nation deal to build what has been dubbed the world's most expensive weapon.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott last year committed Australia to buy an extra 58 F-35 fighters - making a fleet of 72 - at a cost of around US$98 million ($134.8 million) for each plane.

But it remains unclear whether the promise to withdraw Canada from the project will add to the cost of the fighters for the remaining partners.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper had been an enthusiastic supporter of the F-35, pledging to buy 65 of the jets in 2010, only to later put the purchase on hold amid doubts over cost overruns and technical difficulties.

“Canada's withdrawal from combat missions in Syria was unlikely to have much practical effect.

He said Russia's participation was far more significant, along with that of the Iranians, forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and various militias,” Rodger Shanahan, a Middle East specialist with the Lowy Institute was quoted by Sydney Morning Herald new daily as saying.

F35 deemed price is supposed to whopping 200 Mil at start and i dont see it coming down due to inflation and other variables. What Canadian dubbs for is very interesting as quoted

So thing is what is ultimate replacement for F35 eventually bcas at the moment no country has operational stealth platform to challenge probably Russia but considering warm ties with US it will not happen ,this leaves chinese and if any other country supposed to have F35 competitor. Seeing this I think China has Aced with J31 for export .too much potential and rev

You think Canada would buy J-31 with US pressure to not buy? I see delusions, not reality here. Canada's front-runner is Super Hornet, per industry sources. Canada didn't want F-35 either, they don't want J-31 too. Too many unknowns with J-31, too soon to call it a competitor to F-35. No even in production yet. Stealth is too expensive for Canada, Canada's economy is ill.

Why would China sell J-31 to Canada with US-Canada military partnership? Practically ensures J-31 ends up in US intelligence hands. Delusions, not reality.

Canada didn't want F-35 anyway.

From the article - Big Liberal Win In Canada Is Bad News For The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter

As for a new fighter aircraft, Trudeau and the Liberals have stated again and again that Canada’s fighter corps’ primary mission is self defense, and there is no need for the F-35’s expensive stealth first-strike capabilities. As such, the likely contenders will to replace Canada’s aging Hornets will be the F/A-18E Super Hornet, the French Rafale, the Eurofighter Typhoon, and possibly the JAS-39E Gripen, with the Super Hornet being the clear incumbent.

Hvad en belastning af skrald! Canada er ikke interesseret i et dyrt stealth fly, de knap nok ville F- 35. De udskiftning muligheder er Typhoon, Rafale, Gripen og Super Hornet. Canada hælder mod Hornet.

Canada already uses CF-18, Super Hornet makes sense.

If you read correctly i have already mentioned about 5th Gen option from Russia why this deal is not gonna happened ,Same fate is for Chinese deal ,My point was there are and will be big potential market for Chinese J31 bcas of F35 either non availability or not offering to countries .Similarly i think it will be a foolish decision to go for F18 as F35 and F18 are totally different platform .How Canda is going to tackle emerging threats of 5th Gen from East i simiply cant understand

.
Let Canada check prices of Rafale & Typhoon. They will come to their senses & buy F-35.

There have been many analyst who spoke on this and wants Rafale instead of F-35, even in Austalia also. Hidden agenda they (canada & Aussies) wants F-22 instead of F-35.
Some experts even adviced to go for Su-35 instead of F-35 LOLZ

In the end they will go for F-35, after all US is the one who have the Umbrella

They should go for F/A-18E or Rafale and F-35A. and they will go the same I think

What about the money they already put in F-35 program?

Precisely that was my point As American Allies cant go any where else since they have choosen the side which is famous for betraying its own. So rest is BS its just plan tactics to negotiate or probably asking more in return.

Canada can't do that and they won't, sooner or later they'll need a 5th generation platform and F-35 is the only thing they can get their hands on. Due to Canada's close relations with USA neither Russia nor China would sell their 5th generation planes to Canada however if there was a European 5th gen aircraft then Canada could have got that but there isn't one so they have to buy F-35 because the other option is F-22 which isn't available to anyone.

On the other hand there are possibility that they might go for Super Hornet to replace their current CF-18 but I don't think they'll go for EF or Rafale firstly because it would be wise to shift to a platform that is more or less the same that you have now, it would save time and money both. Secondly USA won't let that happen.

@volatile got it right probably they intend to get something more.
Good decision . they should ask F-22 instead of F-35.
F-22 is not for sale its just limited to USAF, Japan once asked for them and received a straight NO in reply. Congress has placed a ban on F-22s export. In fact there will be no more F-22s made its assembly line is closed.

Isnt both jets totally different one is multirole ( F-35 ) and other for air superiority ( F-22) ?

Are their really any threats to Canada ??
I dont think they have any enemy but yes they are busy making one in ME

Already que of 1000 F-35 is there, could be adjusted.

I think USA might allow F-22 for Canada. And Canada might prefer F-18 + F-22. They can also go for Eurofighter after all they host German EF in german base in canada. But for them the best is f-22 + f-18 reason canada don't need an expeditory airforce like USA. All it need is the F-22 for home security, and F-18 for all other as multirole+naval.

With Canada Usa have open borders, share unified electic system, so usa don't feel any threat or problem with canada
