Canada issues terrorism warning for travellers to India
Canada has joined a growing list of countries warning residents to be careful when travelling to India due to the potential for terror attacks.
The Department of Foreign Affairs updated its travel report to India Tuesday, following Australia and Israel which issued similar warnings.
"There is a high risk of terrorism throughout India," the travel report reads. "Canadians should exercise a high degree of caution at all times.
Canadians in India should be particularly vigilant in the lead up to and on days of national significance, such as Diwali (Oct. 17), Republic Day (Jan. 26) and Independence Day (Aug. 15), as militants have used such occasions to mount attacks in the past."
India said on Tuesday it is increasing security to thwart possible militant strikes. Security has been tightened with more checks in shopping malls, government buildings and important landmarks in Maharashtra state and its main city of Mumbai, which goes to state polls in October.
This week, John Brumby, Australia's Victoria state premier, cancelled his trip to Mumbai after the Australian government issued a warning to avoid the city.
Both Israel and Australia based their warnings on intelligence reports.
India is a popular destination for Israeli tourists.
Foreign tourists at two plush hotels and a Jewish centre were attacked by at least 10 gunmen last November in a militant strike on Mumbai. Two Canadians were killed during the attacks that claimed the lives of at least 195 people.
