last year government received a tax amount of Rs36bn on whitening of foreign assets and Rs61bn on domestic assets. In addition, $40 million has been repatriated. The only good thing about this scheme is "Every Pakistani citizen will be able to avail the scheme except for people who have held a public office and their dependents."
Tax amnesty schemes have never worked and the reason for it is that there has never been a crackdown on tax-evaders after the scheme's timeline had elapsed. I reckon this one will fail too and for exactly the same reason, no repercussions for not availing the scheme.
It would be nice If foreign assets are repatriated, otherwise it's a peanut as always.
But the foreign assets of Big fish are protected by international lobbies. Offshore havens and tax avoidance have influential defenders who continuously lobby hard to maintain the status quo within system, so it's really hard to collect handsome tax amount by this amnesty scheme. I bet that the amnesty scheme will be extended.
Suggestion
the plans for automatic sharing of pakistanis tax data between Pakistan & other countries is required to curb the foreign assets in order to put final full stop on money laundering.
