As a Swiss law banning burqas came into effect in Switzerland's Ticino region on Friday, enforcing a fine of over $11,000 for those who violate the law, a Muslim convert and a businessman protesting the ban were fined,The Independent reported.

The controversial law, which was voted in by a referendum, outlaws face-covering headgear.

Nora Illi and Rachid Nekkaz, prominent Muslim-rights campaigners, walked in the streets of Locarno in burqas after the rule was introduced.

Police stopped Nekkaz, a French-Algerian national, and Illi, a convert from Zurich, and fined them over $230 and $9,900 respectively.

Local government officials, while Nekkaz and Illi protested, collected signatures calling for a nationwide ban on the burqa.

The law, which originated as a people's initiative, received 65 per cent of the vote in Ticino in 2013, where the majority of the population are Roman Catholic. The law was approved by the local government in November after a parliament ruling stated that it did not contradict Swiss federal law.

Georgio Ghiringhelli, who proposed the law, said the ruling would send a message to "Islamic fundamentalists" in the country.

"Those who want to integrate are welcome, irrespective of their religion, but those who rebuff our values and aim to build a parallel society based on religious laws, and want to place it over our society, are not welcome," he said.

The imposition of the law comes days after reports that two Muslim girls were denied Swiss citizenship after they refused to take swimming lessons alongside boys at their school

I love it, kudos to the Swiss for bringing this into fruition.

Muslims should leave the west and enforce a ban on all kinds of western ways such as wearing skirts in Muslim states. There's no point trying to have basic human rights in the west.

This secular revolution is turning into a dangerous anti religion movement altogether.

The key here is "parraell societies" it's their land so respect their rules, if you can't then don't try to change their way of life and enforce it upon them. If you want your countries to enforce strict Islamic laws then that's your prerogative!

Their country, their rules, if some have a problem with it, they are free to leave, Burqa (shuttle cock the best one I like) is cultural and nothing to do with Islam.

You mean someone else but not you!

This is precisely what democracy is.
An arrogant majority can vote to curb the rights of the minority.
How long can you play the miniority card, when Islam is the fastest growing religion. It's absurd to think otherwise but 1 third of the human population is a Muslim.

This philosophy "It's their land, their choice" is not heard when Muslims want to have sharia law in their land.

"It's their land so respect their rules."
That's a very dangerous statement to begin with.
If all the Muslim countries start legislating to curb the religious freedom of non muslims therein, then that will be seen as oppression and extremism and what not.
Just because it's your land, doesn't mean you start forcing your lifestyles on people who live therein and don't share your world view.
If Muslim countries ban skirts and bikinis, then they are not suppressing the religious freedom of anybody because no religion demands roaming naked in streets.
It's so shameful.

I don't know what you meant but I left the west long time ago. I've seen it all, be it democracy or human rights and have no fascination left for the west.

Muslims are still a minority in many western countries.
Common sense.

Shameful,it's just shaneful.

Can a Caucasian Christian wear a Bikini in Saudi? At least can they wear a skirt? At least can they wear a shirt and trouser without a head scarf?

Why should a Christian follow Muslim practices?
