Bullet train for only Dhaka-Ctg route: PM

True, I feel ashame seeing the road condition of our 2nd largest city. Very few roads in Chattogram are in good quality or condition. I do not see any 8-12 lane roads, most of the roads has no accompanying footpath or very little of it. Road side condition are absolutely pathetic in most of the places. Road side dump, dust, mud, hawkers, numerous rickshaws, electric wire plexus made appalling look and very difficult to walk. Besides govt. I think the city administration are also a big failure in Chattogram. They can not even spend the city budget money. Every year, most of the budget spending remain unfulfilled and they just add those unspent money to next years city budget despite the pathetic condition of roads. They seems to be totally oblivious on how the city looks or how to alleviate the suffering of commuters and pedestrians.

The Chittagong city corporation (despite being second largest city) is run by amateurs. For that matter look at Rajshahi and observe how clean that city looks, owing to good governance. Chittagong needs a better group of people as city fathers (as professionals) to run their city using better governance by taking lessons from other developed cities their size. They are still in the 'regional city' mindset.

I remember talking to ABM Mohiuddin (Mayor) sometime back and he mentioned going to Tokyo every year at the invitation of Bangladeshi re-conditioned car exporters from Japan, now you make any guesses by using 2+2 what was the impetus of these trips. I don't want to bad mouth a dead guy during Ramadan. He also reportedly ran a mafia syndicate in the port city and collected 'toll' for every container going in and out of the port. What civilized nation allows this type of activity?

So these are the types of politicians that our PM appoints to that city, semi-educated goonda leaders, rabble rousers and ex-AL cadre folks, only qualification being that they be 'Chatigaiya'. What better governance do you expect from the likes of these folks?

Some people in the Chittagong city corporation are not from Chittagong but actually from noakhali ..... There is a high post in the city corporation which is currently chaired by someone whose not even from Chittagong division..... Go figure

On my way from sunamganj to Syhlet airport it was like bouncey castle on wheels. So I know what mean

Also Bangladesh in this phase doesn't need this, future planning can be done and what ever land that needs to be purchased, should done for the bullet train rather than later.

If relevant tourism infrastructure gets developed by coxs bazaar and Chittagong beach then, the bullet train will be a bonus.

I think of this as nothing more then long term planning for a fast growing economy, where vision is needed.

I can't remember that name of this pacific island that was rich in fertilizer minerals in the '50s and at one point became richer than U.S in gdp per capita. Due to corruption and NO economic vision they are at the bottom.

I am not a fan of train anyways. We need four lane expressways for all our road networks. That should suffice for a small country like us. Rails is for ultra long distance or for inner-city transport.

This bullet train project is simply show off by the government to hide other mismanagement in me most government run institutions. For a small country like us any train that can go from one place to another within 2/3 hours is enough. It's better to improve current line stations and quality of service by railway as well as improving passenger coaches quality .

A country of BD's size and density is just perfect for 160-200km/h railways to link the major cities.
You can move far more people by train between cities than on a highway per hour for example and it is much safer by train.

With Dhaka being in the centre of the country, this will mean it takes only 2 hours at most to get to the capital from nearly any other city in the country.

BD should discourage car use as much as possible due to other reasons such as congestion and pollution. If the trains are electric then they can be powered by either clean nuclear or solar.

This is Bangladesh we are talking about so let's lets be realistic, every Tom, Dick and Harry here wants to show off with car as soon as they have secured threes square meals a day.

Infact so many marriages are being broken because the girls family can't afford to give the husband a car. This is the sad ground reality. Oh and not to forget the political folks and the rich thieves aka upper class who run around with 3 cars per house hold.

When it comes to Bangladesh nothing on the ground will change even if we become a trillion dollar economy. Until our people learn to spend in moderation, learn to be humble, respect the law, condemn corruption and learn to be compassionate to the poorer folks nothing will change, we will still remain a backward country.

Below is a citation for Rooppur the borrowing being $11.38 billion and BD will have to pay a total of $18.23 billion to be paid in 28 years.

"Considering the interest on the credit amount of $11.38 billion, Bangladesh has to repay an additional $6.84 billion for materialising the Rooppur nuclear power plant, resulting the total cost to raise up to $18.23 billion, claimed the government officials. It suggests that, one-third of the total investment would be spent to pay the interests only".

If the final cost is $18.23 for the bullet train how much the train system will have to earn? I am busy to work it out. So, please bring out your scientific calculator to know about the daily loan payment in Taka. Is it Tk150 million every day?

If so, the ticket will cost about Tk6,000- per head if (10 trains run 2 times up and down, 1300 passengers in each train). But, this money is just for loan repayment. It does not include operating cost, staff salaries, electricity cost, maintenance cost and many thousand other things. If all costs are included the ticket price may be Tk40,000- one way. No doubt bullet train will be a good business!!

By the way, are you guys sure 26,000 passengers will use this train every day? Our Hasina may know how idiot some of our PDF guys are. So, she intentionally says something that brings activities in this sub-section. Do not forget that this sub-section is watched regularly by Hasina's people.

No-one who has commented on this thread supports the 12 billion US dollars on this bullet train
and so I have no idea why you spent so much time writing up this post of yours.

May be two or three accepted this white elephant project and not others. People in other countries cut their coats according to the size of their clothes. We do not follow this simple thing. We have no money and no technology but we expect the govt to borrow money to eat Ghee Bhat.

I ask Hasina Bibi to fix the water logging in Dhaka. Our women raise Saree above knees to avoid wetting it, but the GoB not taking any steps to fix it. Can it be because this will be a local project done by either Obaidul Qader's ministry or Dhaka Municipality? It may also be a joint venture.

However, Hasina and her ministers know local projects with local money do not lay golden eggs for them. Only projects done by foreign money is in their strict control and they earn big two pice there.

Also the world is trying to o get away from being overly reliant on auto mobiles. Auto mobiles are one of the leading cause of pollution and global warming and it would also force Bangladesh to import oil meet domestic consumption thereby reducing foreign reserves. They should still build 4 lanes highways, but for mass movement of people, modern railways should be built to connect all big cities in Bangladesh. Both should be developed for efficiency so they can both works as a backup in the times of crisis and maintenances.
