Two British men dubbed the ‘IS Beatles’ could be tried in the US – where they could potentially face the death penalty - over their part in a terror cell which kidnapped and beheaded Westerners.
Londoners El Shafee Elsheikh and Alexanda Kotey, who were given the tag because of their British accents, are being held in a Syrian jail accused of being part of an IS execution cell.
It’s believed to be behind the beheadings of at least 27 western hostages including American journalist James Foley and British man Alan Henning.
BBC News reports the men had “called into question” the British government’s attempt to have them tried in the US.
According to reports, the UK government said last month it would demand no "assurances" that the pair will not receive the death penalty if they are convicted in the US.
The UK has sought assurances previously from foreign governments that the death penalty would not be used in cases where the country provided information or extradited suspects.

Journalist James Foley was killed by an ISIS cell.

The pair spoke to the BBC from solitary confinement.
“What makes the British government want a British citizen to be tried in America? Like what's behind it?" said Mr Elsheikh.

The pair’s British citizenship has already been revoked, British Security Minister Ben Wallace told the BBC.
Other British-born 'IS Beatles' member Aine Davis was jailed in Turkey in 2017 while Mohammed Emwazi, known as Jihad John, was killed by a drone strike three years ago.
The UK is awaiting a judge’s ruling over the case.
