What's new

"Britain is like an old theme park sliding into the Atlantic compared to modern China." Former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating

It'll be a great injustice to compare China with Britain.

Britain is a fully developed, super high-tech, advanced nation.
China is a developing nation. It has yet to be fully developed.

Yes, people get impressed with everything new and shiny that China puts up these days but this is what Britain was putting up decades or even a century ago. So, what will China's current infrastructure look like in a few decades? Will it still be shiny as today?

The most important thing which is yet to be seen is that by the time China is fully developed and Chinese people are well off, will the country remain unified as it is today? I believe China still has many societal changes, experimentations yet to go through.

Also, despite China looks new and shiny, billions of people from the developing world dream of migrating to the Britain. Nobody wants to go to China. Why?
There are millions of foreigners in China and if China relaxed its immigration regulations, there would be millions more from the poorer countries. In addition, there are hundreds of thousands of foreign students in Chinese universities. However, China is not an immigrant society and I do think they need to relax some of their requirements and regulations in order to attract more foreign talent.

As far as why immigration to the UK has historically been more desirable, it is pretty simple, because of the dominance of the British empire. The Uk was the metropole so naturally it attracted many of the citizens from its former colonies. However the UK today is mostly running on legacy and these impressions are more due to the past rather than the future or the rapidly changing reality of today.

.. The United States still makes things, the U.K. makes absolutely nothing. ...

UK manufacturing exports are worth $369 billion.

another one living in the past, british empire days way over 100 years ago, uk is like a junior crime partner to USA in any matters. Uncle Sam says to turn left, does Uk dare to turn right?

Uk is high tech? What uk has that China doesn’t have?

only poor people from third world dream migrating to uk to be a janitor, their life achievements

UK got rich by robbing other people's homes. Don't try to deny that. Britain stole 45 trillion USD from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Google it if you want. China is totally different.

China is like a hard working guy that works and follows the law. Does not cheat and rob people.

In what tech is China behind UK? We are in 2021 right now not 2000. China is for example light years ahead of UK in military tech.

Are you sure it's changing as I can't see the change anywhere?

Speaking purely from Pakistani perspective, most Pakistanis even the patriots if given the chance, will pack everything and migrate to the UK.

There are other countries in Europe that are highly developed such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain, etc. and there are thousands of Pakistanis in those countries, but they're all there (some of them who have even settled) just waiting for the right chance to migrate further into the UK, specifically to the UK.

Every time I am in Pakistan people ask me about the legal ways of getting into the UK. They're not interested in any other country, just the UK.

Before Hong Kong was recently taken over by China, some Pakistanis were going there to further migrate to the UK, not move to China, Japan, Singapore, just the UK by whatever means.

This immigration to the UK is not going to change anytime soon. Simply because people only see the numbers going into the UK and not the number of people who move out of the UK to settle elsewhere such as the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. Therefore, the Government has this policy to make sure the population doesnt decline. (All the political debates in the UK are not against immigration but the quality of immigration).

In Pakistani media, films, shows, dramas, news, everywhere, there's so much promotion of Pakistanis living in or moving to the UK, all in positive light.

Even though there's only ever positive mention of China in Pakistani media and Pakistanis admire and see China as a great country today, you will not find one Pakistani wishing to migrate to China. It just doesn't come to mind or in a discussion.

Another reason that many people may not be aware of is that the UK has an unacknowledged preference for immigrants from Pakistan and India as both of these countries are nuclear powers. It is an insurance policy. If the UK were to ever face an existential threat from a foreign power, both Pakistan and India will be forced to come to UK's aid due to the large Pakistani and Indian populations settled there.

I don’t doubt what you are saying but it doesn’t contradict any of what I said. The UK was the former colonial power over Pakistan and there are large pakistani communities there so there is a huge historic precedent of Pakistanis immigrating to the UK.

China, because it has not colonized and imposed its culture over all these huge swathes of countries, is culturally alien to most foreign countries. This combined with the fact that China doesn’t exactly encourage immigration means that there is not a huge history of immigration to China. All of this does not discount the fact that China has rapidly developed and that the middle class in China today enjoy a great quality of life. Because much of this development is relatively recent, perceptions have changed slowly and perhaps that is why you are not aware of it.

China doesn't allow immigrants, her policies to foreigners are not very friendly, that is true. To a lesser extent, Japan and Korea are the same, no east Asian nations are immigrant friendly due to the local culture. And very few locals in East Asia speak English, this is also what makes non east Asians find very difficult to fit in the main stream local Confucius culture. Besides, Accepting immigrants is not a standard to judge a country's overall development.
As for infrastructure, anyone who recently visited both China and UK? Such people can give a good comparison.

I don't know if you know what you are talking about, take my city, Beijing, as an example, everything here was largely already put in place 1,000 years ago.

I know about quite few Pakistani shopkeepers and restaurateurs (and others) in China. problem is not that China is not allowing Pakistanis to live in China, the problem is the Pakistanis themselves who'd much rather move to England and enjoy social security aid rather than go to China and have to do actual work as well as have to learn a new language and culture.

Then they got to be careful, China regularly cracks down on foreigners.

. . . .
CNN is on a anti china mission, you moron or a CNN employee
write all this in Chinese you feku!
I m not supposed to post all things postive about China and I don't respresent China, I only represent myself. I m in tutoring industry and I personally was called by the police checking our foreigner employment details, China is cracking down on foreingers on regular basis, I know it for a fact first hand, which news channel reports this doesn't matter, other news channels also report it, google and find it out.

It's funny of you think just becos no Pakistanis wants to migrate to China and that auto assume China is backwards?

Do China education is based on English? No.
Chinese culture is something very unique which totally different from what Pakistanis experience from mostly their western countries.

The most important factor, China don't welcome migrants like UK and US. The chances of Pakistanis getting a green card from China is as good as striking a lottery.

in the nineties i used to visit Hong Kong frequently.

i have been to Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Hangzhou (what a beautiful city) during previous two decade.

they have been changed massively, developed & modernized. i have seen Shanghai skyline rising over two decades.
I have been to almost most major cities of Europe and I have been to Mainland China and HK. I had said years ago before it became cliche to say this - Chinese cities make NY look like a back water town. People would laugh at me. Fast forward 10 years. The hubris that exists in the West will be its downfall. It is a disease that seeps most people's psyche.
