US is not obliged to do anything but that, but Saudi's are supposed to defend themselves instead of just taking the hit. This is embarrassing for Saudi's and highlights their lack of strategic outlook for the region and ability to assert themselves as a regional force that its allies can look up to.

Of course most likely Saudis/Emirates made it clear to the US that they don't want to get militarily entangled with Iran and not to launch some kind of reprisal strike.

On other hand, Iran is still dealing with sanctions and it has to get more creative or just wait it out and hope Trump loses.
